Harvey Norman Price Match - A New Low

So was trying to get Harvey Norman to do a price match (I know, glutton for punishment) but this one I thought took it to a totally new level.

I got told that because the item was on sale at the competitor, this was considered a 'display offer' and thus not covered under their price match offer.

-Slap head-

EDIT:

Update: As suggested I had gone through Harvey Norman's facebook page to question why. They've replied that apparently the glitch was on their side and have apologised for the confusion. They even made the original person who told me no; send out the discount link so I could buy at the matched price.

  • I recently experienced similar. At least you got a bs reason. I just got hung up on lol

JB once told me that they wouldn't price match Officeworks on a Samsung tablet because Officeworks do the warranty repairs themselves and JB send them back to Samsung……..Needless to say when I contacted officeworks about this, they were unaware of this process.

    • But… in-house repairs cost money, Samsung would repair for free?

      • Officeworks have never and will never do in house repairs.

Fergy even said he called them and they said they had no clue about what he was saying. The guy at JB was obviously making up stuff so he didnt have to price match

"this was considered a 'display offer' "

What does this even mean? Have you send feedback back to HN?

    • Via their facebook page asking if it was for real. No reply as yet.

JB Staff told me they cant match because it was WAY BELOW their cost… yeah right

    • Went to HN once to buy an item priced at $3000 and the lowest they would go was $2700, that's it.
I then told them about the same item being on special with another retailer for $2500 and they looked it up on the web and found it to be true. That other retailer had a store across from this HN store btw.
HN said that was way below their purchase price but they will match it anyway.
If they had looked closer they would have seen that the special was only at one store some 160km away, even their local store would not match it.. :-) Sometimes you win, always worth a try.

  • How many places actually 'guarantee' a price match? Is it only Officeworks? (Whose price matching dodges are legendary)

Found OW around here to be very obliging. Lots of time it is local store policy or attitude of the salesperson.

      • I've found the "Sorry, it's a different model number" excuse a few times… it's the same model from the manufacturer but Officeworks will buy it with an exclusive model number.

Lots of stores do that now to avoid price matching… Bunnings here is known for it.

    • Good Guys offer a formal guarantee even after you buy…but they still refused to honour a legitimate price match on an ipad.

      • I find it sometimes easier to go the price match guarantee as it's handled by a different department in store (saying that it is a gamble if they refuse).

In store I've had one store refuse to price match a samsung tv, i drove to another TGG store and they did. guess which store now gets my business? Same store that priced matched my TV also priced match a Nikon D33000 out of stock at officeworks.

  • Same with my experience in Bing Lee. They don't have balls.

Can you report to ACCC? I had similar issue. It's best to let ACCC keep all records of these type of dodgy dealings from any retailers.

  • So many times I have been knocked back by HN while trying to price match JB. Recently was that LG 4K 65inch TV deal around 2015 end. One HN store manager laughed at me and said they must have a printing mistake and hung up…other guy said that price was way below their cost price; no way they will sell it at that. Oh well…went and bought it at JB. I would have loved to use my 60 month interest free at HN but only got to use 6 months from JB.

    • What was Gerry on tv bitching about last night? I saw the promo but missed the actual story.

  • Hardly surprising, glad to see it was sorted

  • Amazon is coming to town.
He was saying he would match their prices
I remember when he went on TV saying he would match dick smiths fire sale prices But his franchisees employees disagreed when asked

  • can someone explain to me, why bother with price matching at all? i get that some places will price beat (if you provide a mountain of evidence and get the right sales guy) but why even bother trying to give harvey norman your business when they are known for absolutely never being competitive amongst a slew of other rubbish practices, but not even just them, short of pulling a fast one what am i missing that you dont just reward the place with the decent price?

You might have HN gift cards to use, HN may be the closest to you with existing stock, there might be AMEX deal for HN - just a few reasons.

  • Tried to get HN to beat next door David Jones price for Miele vacuum long time ago in Chatswood. They told me that they will price beat only what they have in their published paper catalog.
It is called Hardly Normal not for nothing.

  • the same thing happened to me with buying a laptop that was cheaper than the GoodGuys I asked if they woud match price and told me they would if I bring the advertisement into them which I did and the person that I had the original conversation with when I gave them they then declined the offer by saying That is too cheap so we will not be selling the computer for the reason that they would lose out on the deal

    • So did you punch that douche in the face and never go back to that store?

      • Of course he did, then he burnt down the store,
kicked Gerry Harvey in the nuts,
and only spends his money where they never dare do such things,
        like jb-hifi

        • Well that escalated quickly..

  • … apparently the glitch was on their side and have apologised for the confusion.

Yes yes, it was a "glitch". LOL. Business as usual for Harvey Norman. Now that is sorted, Gerry Harvey can get back to lobbying for higher import taxes to protect his business.
