ASUS ROG GL752VW 17" Gaming Laptop $1499 @ Mwave

50

I saw an Ad on Facebook saying that ASUS is having a 30% off on RRP for Chinese New Year sale. But this one is cheaper by another $100 compared to ASUS website

  • How is the batter life. Can it at least last 4 hours? It is only 4 cell.

    • I saw that too. Not sure how long it will last.

    I have a similar model.

Mine is 2 years old and has a better video card (980), more RAM and more storage.

This laptop isn't such a great deal anymore - its obsolete - at least 2 years old, has an outdated video card (9xx series vs 10xx).

The mobile 960 video card was pretty average when it was new, and is actually pretty crap by today's standards.

The battery is built into the motherboard, so you can't easily swap it with a spare. The battery life is reasonable, but it only lasts about 200-300 recharges then starts failing - and is a $200+ part to replace (many places ask $300+ for a genuine battery and the clone batteries are shite).

Battery life depends on what you are doing with the machine - web browsing you get 2+ hours easily.
Gaming 1 hour or max 2 hours depending on how hard you are pushing the graphics.

It's not a bad laptop but next time I am going something a little less heavy - 2.8kg is without the power block, which adds at least another 500 grams.

The cooling on this laptop is superb. Its actually made for gaming, unlike the crap made by the likes of HP.

Honestly if you want an Asus get a newer one with a 10xx series video card. The latest models have all of this plus more - albeit for more money but they'll be much better long term buys.

    • I didn't know laptop manufacturers had started playing this sad game. Thanks for the info. I still have 2 working laptops but they're starting to get a bit long in the tooth. I'll go into my next purchase better informed thanks to your post.

    • Thanks for the info. Very useful indeed.

  • Yup… looks like the retail/laptop companies are starting to clear their 900 series GPUs

  • Old GPU, don't bother with this series anymore. It's just a well binned 860M chip to begin with. Make the ENORMOUS leap to the 1060/70/80 and don't look back. No point buying out dated tech for this price.

    • Also, 2GB version of the card as well so it's even worse. Modern games will -easily- chew through that and be craving more juice.

Nothing special. There's about 5 stores selling at the same price. http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=GL752VW&spos=3

  • I went through the process of finding a gaming laptop just before Xmas and the 15" ROG was on the short list.
I ended up with the 15" HP Envy as it had the additional 128Gb SSD and was around 1Kg lighter than the ROG. I got it for $1250 from JB Hifi when they had the 15% off laptop sale.
This one isn't a bad price for the 17" though.

    • Good luck with the Envy. IN the past the cooling on the Envy series has been woefully inadequate so they tended to overheat when you played graphics intensive games - this in turn led to them failing far more quickly than you would like a $1000+ laptop to fail.

One thing for the ASUS, the cooling is top of the line.

      • I am looking at MSI gaming laptop. Any recommendations on that comparing against Asus and lenovo?

I have used Lenovo business laptops - I didn't know they made much that was truly gaming oriented.

The cooling on their laptops is so/so for gaming from the ones I have seen.

Lenovo tend to be very pricey - but also very solid. I'd take the Asus over a Lenovo for gaming - Lenovo over Asus for business.

MSI seems to think having 1 million colours in your keyboard backlight LEDS is a cool feature - they think this is more important than the quality of the screen or the other specs of the laptop.
          So I pass on MSI.

I havent owned an MSI laptop - but I'd buy an Asus video card for a desktop over the same card MSI branded any day of the week - so I'd stick with Asus unless the MSI gives much better bang for buck

Wouldn't waste money on anything with a 9 series gpu. As above look for new hardware.

  • You guys - check out the new deals from Metabox.

$1370 for 7700hq,1050 GPU, M2 drive, options to customize.

This model is a further $100 cheaper if you drop the standard M2 (a slower Intel 540s)

    https://www.kongcomputers.com/product-detail/gamers/metabox-…

Has 2yr warranty - HOWEVER - It requires you to return it to Perth NOT Kong computers!

(lame if you don't happen to live in Perth!)

How does this compare to MSI and ASUS 2017 offerings…?

    Note - it's not available for 2.5wks…
