Cloud Backup to MS OneDrive - Does It Have to Be a OneDrive Folder?

I don't want to access my data remotely from the cloud.
I just want the cloud backup, if ever my hard drive fails.
Is it correct that you have to create a specifically labelled OneDrive folder for OneDrive cloud to sync with?
You can't just pick a folder on your C drive and say sync that specific folder, without moving its location or name?

  • I just took the OneDrive defaults so I can't answer whether it is mandatory to accept the default directory BUT if your question is aimed towards "how do I avoid having 2 copies of a directory (ie one in the One Drive folder so I can back it up & the other being the program's working directory location) and so losing a mile of disk space" then look up "symbolic links" via Google.

I had 110GB of things I wanted to backup & there was no way I wanted to have that duplicated so OneDrive could "see" it in the OneDrive folder. Having symbolic links from the working folder to the OneDrive folder solved that.

As an aside I gave up on OneDrive, even though it was 100GB freebie, late last year due to the appalling upload speed (even more appalling than Oz's joke of an internet) and OneDrive starting to duplicate back stuff I'd uploaded by downloading back onto my PC. When I Googled both problem's, in short I saw I wasn't the only one and that MS was simply ignoring both matters.

FWIW went on the sharply discounted IDrive offer, no idea if still available, one year trial 80% or so off.

    • Thanks, but iDrive have shocking reviews of customer service & support, in the comments section on the PcMag review of their service

      • Hmmm must have a look then. All I can say is that it appears to be still working for me. From what you have typed I hope I don't need support! Thanks for the headsup.

        • I am tossing up between Carbonite & Backblaze.
It will depend on whether they can backup specific folders.

  • +1

I back up a few folders to one drive. I use duplicati - it allows me to encrypt the folders plus set regular sync schedules. Duplicati is free https://www.duplicati.com

It doesn't require any duplication of files on my end - upload is reasonably quick on the NBN.

  • Settled for SOSOnline - allows you to back up a specific folder & they have the fastest independently tested upload speeds.

  • be ware that syncing a folder is not a backup.
be sure to keep a backup on a system that cannot be overwritten or deleted by a bad synhronisation
