Pros and Cons - Working in Rural & Metropolitan Areas in Education

Hello!

I'd like to know what the pros and cons are for working in metro and rural areas. I'm thinking of pursuing primary or secondary education and a permanent placement.

Thanks!

So far I'm thinking:

METRO

PROS:

Convenience - Easy access to services (leisure and professional) and wide range of products - easy to source school material
More professionals in education = more opportunities for career change/growth/advice
People don't really care about what you do nor who you

CONS:

Rent and housing is expensive
Traffic jams

RURAL

PROS:

Close-knit community
More space and green areas/nature
Relaxed atmosphere

CONS:

Isolation - travelling to and from work may be difficult without a vehicle
Services and resource variety limited - some services may not be available, may be hard to source certain products
Rural areas don't have many people so you know about everyone's lives

  • There is the intermediate areas, if you want a city but not the capital you can opt for a seondary city in the state, e.g. not Melbourne but Geelong. Public transport is still good, housing is a bit cheaper and you might have advantages like the beach nearby. I have a brother who is a teacher at Apollo Bay, he loves it. He can go surfing in the morning, then teach during the day and there is no traffic and he gets on well with the kids and the parents.

  • +1

Rural usually have more vacancies and easier to get employed.
What appeals to you? City or rural? I would take rural every time…
You need to become qualified before you start to consider matters like this. Thinking about it and finishing it are two different things.
An acquaintance I knew had great intentions of doing this but ended up working for the local fast food place.

  • My wife is an aged care worker and I'm an IT specialist, if a small town or local government offered us free housing and cars and a suitable wage we'd move wherever they wanted.

Sometimes I think city life is a bit overrated, but then again I do love it too :)

  • Thanks for the replies. I'll probably stick with metro.
