Great offer - but almost seems too good to be true - are there any catches or hidden costs?

Do you support cPanel & wordpress installs?

    • Hi railspider,

No, there are no hidden fees, no gotchas, no "bill shock". Just good ol' fashion web hosting :D

      Thanks,
      Christopher H.

      • Do you use the more efficient LiteSpeed web server?

        IF not now, When? ;-)

        • If we get enough "paid" clients who want to use Lightspeed, we will definitely put it on our roadmap :)

        • @DataOneNetworks:
          If you DON'T wait for payment-in-advance, &
          (need less H/W per user).

The argument For it is Economic.

          Is it costly to license?

    • You are required to provide a copy of your driver license. LOL

      • +2

It is a simple fraud check. Many companies do complete this from time to time to verify that orders are genuine. And you have used a domain that does not appear to be registered https://dig.whois.com.au/whois/overule.be which raised a red flag.

        • +2

did you just publicly disclose what domain name a user was going to sign up with. doesn't exactly inspire confidence that you will keep users identities safe

        • +4

          @sirrobin:

The domain name was not registered, therefore is not owned by the user and does not belong to the user, and they did not opt to register the domain name upon registration.

To require & accept ONLY a Drivers Lic. Discriminates against those who (eg, due to Disability or advanced Age) have None.

To those who -say- they are concerned about Privacy, eg, due to this vendor eMailing, eg, your Password in Plain Text, I ask:

          • Why AREN'T you using a Secure eMail?!?

(IMO, if ALL vendors did so, it would Save me Time (ie, each time I forget a password) to just find the First eMail I got from them, & use it to "refresh" my memory.)

Let me suggest you consider the Free Secure eMail provider:

          • ProtonMail.CH (whose servers are in CH = Switzerland)

"Look after your Own Privacy: Use a Secure eMail service"

        • Look, folks are (or should be, on-line) Free
to buy services in any order they like.

Maybe picking up a free year of hosting
-stimulates- some to begin to look
for a deal on a domain name.

AU businesses can't be "too choosy" IMO.

That they seem to be so (losing clients,
while they remain so) can cost them $$
& their customers may need to pay more,
as a result, making them even Less competitive.

Your ID filter insures no one will, eg,
          submit 1000's of phony registrations.

I say: Leave it at that.

        • @IVI: We have not, will not and never will use a third-party mailhouse that is not reputable on a global level (Microsoft, Amazon, Google, etc.) due to the fact that systems can be compromised, and more than often than not, these sorts of companies have clauses that state they hold no liability in the event of data theft. We simply will not use companies that will not take ownership of their wrongdoings, as these types of clauses are a simple cop-out excuse if they screw things up.

        • @DataOneNetworks:
          I do hope you weren't preJudging ProtonMail.CH…?

They seem to be proPrivacy, AFAIK.

Do you know something I don't know about them?

        • @IVI: No, we are not judging them. We have just taken a proactive step to ensure that our (and our customers') data remains within Australia. We don't even give our suppliers access if we need tech support (which I know limits what they can do).

  • Your use of the Services must be reasonable. You may not place excessive burdens on our, or our third party vendors’, CPUs, servers or other resources or interfere with the services we provide to other customers. You may not use excessive bandwidth. You agree that we may place restrictions on your use of the Services to the extent that they exceed the use of the Services by similarly situated customers.

Yet you allow "Unlimited" bandwidth without a specified "fair share".

Do you have further information on this?

    • Hi athk,

That statement is more aimed towards VPS, Dedicated Server and Colocation clients than those on Shared Web Hosting. Those who are on shared web hosting generally need not worry about this, although if we do see excessive use (e.g. hosting things such as "torrent-to-HTTP" download sites) we reserve the right to place bandwidth restrictions on client services.

      Regards,
      Christopher H.

    • Not using LightSpeed puts more load on your CPUs, I'm told… ;-)

  • Reverts to $12.10 per month after 12 months.

  • +1

    It's all reasonable.
    They are running a business.

  • Bank transfer payment only or credit cards accepted?

    • Hi Grandpipe,

We will be accepting credit card payments. We are still in the process of applying to our merchant for credit card payment facilities. In the meantime, if paying by bank transfer is a concern, please do not hesitate to send us an e-mail to [email protected].

      Regards,
      Christopher H.

I just registered, will see how it is.

My first recommendation is, in the Welcome email, could you please not send people's passwords in plain-text? I would guess that also means my client password is stored plain text, eg:

Dear [x — my full name was here],

Thank you for signing up with us. Your new account has been setup and you can now login to our client area using the details below.

Email Address: b@[x — my email address was here].com
Password: [x — my plain-text password was here]

EDIT: Wow now this is just weird. I've been provisioned an account/website on server mlcshs01.hostlink.com.au. Looking at the domain name hostlink.com.au, isn't this exactly the same deal as FREE 12 Months Business Web Hosting from HostLink? Just that this one has somewhat positive rating, and the other has negative comments…

    • it's not uncommon to get passwords in clear text, the idea is you login in and change it, and have hopefully set up encryption between your mail client and your mail server…. amazing how many IMAP accounts don't use encryption.

Free hosting, what the catch ……
If you are a business how much spare time do you have to move to new hosting after 12 months swap your MX records, etc unless your time is worth very little, and find other other hosting unless a client is paying you…… if you are a home user, well you are probably time rich and money poor and will swap or you are the tech support for the local kids sport club and the secretary translates the cost of hosting into how many sausages they need to sell to pay for their hosting.

My current hosting for mail (home users) is $13 pa for 2 years as a "special"….. probably wouldn't change unless the renewal is large ….

If it was a client for who I had set up hosting… I'd be charging $85 per hour for the work, and to swap to a new provider would cost the customer more in my time than to pay more for hosting.

    • Yep mate, AFAIK this breaks OZB terms. You are definitely right, took me a couple minutes to see who was connected to who.

While I'm here commenting, if you do take this offer up; Please take your own privacy and information into consideration, not only as this has already been brought up in both threads like plaintext passwords and public customer information like domains attempted to use.. But also just due to what a big and aggressive industry data-mining is in our modern age.. Sadly.

It is free hosting, if it floats your boat, just be careful.. Consider it a trade-off that you try keep as much personal information to yourself for the free price.

I welcome any problems/disagreements to what I have said here from the OP (dataonenetworks.com.au / hostlink.com.au).

  • Hello all,

It is correct, that one of my providers is HostLink. The only relationship is that of a "supplier <-> client". We are two different entites, with two different client bases, in two different states using two different client platforms. I am not the only one to resell web hosting, and if I choose to offer free web hosting, the onus is on me to provide that.

As people are receiving an Australian service on Australian hardware, there are certain requirements that must be met, and that is the collection of personal information (which is mentioned in DataOne's Privacy Policy. Being a business operating in Australia, I adhere to and abide by Australian law, and I certainly do not share private information.

For the record, a few things:
    * DataOne Networks has no affiliation with HostLink besides that of a "Supplier-Client".
    * DataOne Networks is an Australian Business (independent of Hostlink, with no affiliation as said above), registered with ASIC and the ATO (both of which can be verified).
    * DataOne Networks will aggressively enforce it's anti-fraud measures. If any clients are deemed to be providing false or misleading information, it will be treated as such and will be placed on an IP-ban list from accessing any of DataOne's services. This also extends to not providing sufficient information.
    * DataOne Networks does not share, pass on, disclose, etc. any personal information that we collect, store or retain for use in provisioning of the services to our clients. If we were to do anything to the contrary, we would be committing an offence under Australian law. The methods of which we may do so is covered under DataOne's Privacy Policy (e.g. seeking assistance from a supplier or vendor, utilising a third party mailhouse such as MailChimp for marketing, etc.)
    * If someone does not own a domain, uses it to register for web hosting, and does not opt to register said domain at the time of obtaining the web hosting, I would believe it to be in the public domain. Therefore I have done no harm or caused no malice by disclosing the domain name earlier.
    * I challenge the public to disprove my integrity as a business owner and disprove the stability of my systems and network. I work tirelessly, days and nights, in the datacentre to put together this business and I refuse to allow people to make claim that I am conducting any bad practices.
    * The deal that I posted was placed well before that of Hostlink.

I welcome any discussion from any members.

    Regards,
    Christopher H.

  • 25 GB Storage
    UNLIMITED Bandwidth

On an Australian host? haha, how long has this company been around? Guessing it won't be long..

    • Why do you believe it is a joke? We are here to stay.

      • Because bandwidth (and everything else - power etc etc) is expensive in AUS. If you are selling unlimited resources you are overselling and there will come a time when someone actually uses 100TB a month you go bust

        • Hello Lenny,

I have to say, we are not "overselling" our services. We use unmetered IP Transit connections which cost us $1000's per month. We could indeed use that 100TB in a month and still not pay a cent extra. We utilise upstream redundant links from independent carrier networks to ensure 99.99% downtime-free connectivity.

There are many Tier 1 and Tier 2 carriers who supply true unmetered IP Transit in the $18-$25 per Mbit range, which is what we use.

          Christopher H.

  • I registered and completed my order, is it necessary to purchase a domain as well or I can get hosting only. After registered, I did not receive any email. Will it take some time?

    • +1

Hi tanxeel, there is no obligation to purchase a domain name with the service. If you have an existing domain, you are free to continue using that, all you need to do is update your existing nameservers.

  • Just signed up and got an error at checkout stage : The promotion code entered has expired :(

    • We have had a barrage of spam sign-ups, and the only way to mitigate this was to expire the promotion early. If you follow the steps in the original post we will honour the promotion.

  • No worries mate. Will give it a go

    • If you have any problems, do drop us an e-mail to [email protected].

      • is your website down?

        • Hi Jimmy,

We were having issues earlier, however everything is back to normal.

          Christopher H.

http://dataonenetworks.com.au/ "can't be reached - took too long to respond"…

    Heatwave??

  • Website not working. It is a wordpress setup landing page. What is going on?

  • I sent in my details to register. I haven't heard anything back.

  • +1

So called company is a scam. Website is now offline for days. Prior to that, I had sent a ticket and I was completely ignored. So much for 24/7 ticket support.

I strongly do not recommend….they do not responsd to the tickets nor to the call

    • -1

You contact our staff, after hours, and make erroneous claims that we have not replied. Systems do have faults from time to time and we told you that we would resend our reply, but you continued to be abusive. As a result, your service was terminated. And to be honest, you do not know what the definition of a "scam" is, you may want to have a look here: http://bfy.tw/AExt.

Again, anyone who lays false claims against my business will be contacted by our legal team.

      • +1

        1) You responded to the call after business hours.
        2) You did not send any email, nor have updated the ticket
        3) Being abusive..if someone insists that they have not received the response is not being abusive…please look it up in google.
        4) To be honest please get to know the meaning of customer service and uptime….you systems have been down for ever.

        Well this sums up

  • +1

    Folks…just be careful..the company is a fraud.

They will let you host your content and finally take the whole services down with no explanation whatsoever

They also will not respond to your call's nor tickets….

    • We exercise our right to terminate services without a reason, nor do we need to provide a reason. If it is due to fraudulent/illegal/criminal activity, the police will be notified and any monies paid will be forwarded to them as part of their investigations. If it is terminated at our discretion, sufficient notice will be given and monies paid (pro-rated) will be refunded via the original payment method.

And yes, we do respond to calls and tickets if it is warranted and the support request is valid.

  • Experience with this deal unfortunately was not good at all.
