Recommendations for Good ADSL Modem Router with Wi-Fi Guest Mode?

I need an ADSL modem router that can do good guest mode (separate/isolated subnet, separate security).
This is for a small medical practice that has bad mobile reception in the waiting area and want to give access to the waiting customers (and, most important, to the paying customer to make quick money transfer from account via internet banking).
The only other requirement is a reliable ADSL chips set, as the connection is on the low end of the quality (long lines).

Price is not much of an issue.
Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Thanks
Cris

  • I have found the Asus ADSL/VDSL routers pretty good - eg https://www.asus.com/au/Networking/DSLAC68U/

    Has guest wifi subnet.

  • Why not just buy a seperate router and biggyback it? That's way you can keep them seperate, QoS, even put the router on a timer

  • First decision: do you want (a) one box which does all (ADSL modem+router+switch+WiFi in one box), easier to set up, or (b) do you want to break functionality into separate boxes. Two examples:

    (a) good solution with easy setup and good monitoring: new Synology RT2600ac.

    (b) DrayTek Vigor ADSL modem + Ubiquiti Edgerouter + Ubiquiti UniFi AP (Access Point). The UniFi AP (or AP Long Range model, or multiple APs) can be located on a wall or ceiling in the reception area. Dirt cheap and extremely reliable combination which destroys all the retail stuff. Google for details. Good Aus retailer: http://www.wireless4now.com.au/

    • I would like a replacement for the existing (very basic) ADSL WiFi modem/router.

This connection is a secondary, backup connection, running only a couple of VoIP phones behind, not the primary LoB connection.

I would like to have a separate net for the Guest area for the waiting area, there are no more than 3 people there at any time.
There is definitely no need for additional access points. Speed is also not an issue, a solution that limits the bandwidth allocate to Guest would be an advantage. Primary goal is to allow access to ebanking, not to allow Netfilx playing.

The above mentioned ASUS seems to be a bit of an overkill but I will take it under consideration.

      Thank you

  • The newer netgear routers appear to all have guest mode. I use Nighthawk X6 R8000 - Guestmode for the kids so they can't change any settings. One consideration would be to have a separate access point on a timer - this way your clients can't come back one evening and download the entire series of Home and Away on your data plan. I have a similar setup where my second access point for the younger kids (With built in timer - D6400 Netgear) turns off at bedtime. You could also if you wanted to block access to certain ip addresses/websites via the router.

    • Just be aware that the Nighthawk is not modem router; in standard installation it would require external modem.
