Myer Cheaper than JB Hi-Fi

I noticed JB was more expensive than Myer today when I was looking at getting a wireless speaker. Since I was near a JB store I walked in and asked if they could price match. Nope, no way. Couldn't do it, "sorry buddy".

Interesting. I'll have to keep an eye on Myer more often.

A few details for the curious: I was looking at the SONY SRSX99 wireless speaker. It's an amazing sounding speaker but too expensive at full retail price. These Sony speakers are often on sale so it's crazy to pay full retail.

Myer has them on sale for $799.20 while the JB price is $999

A review of this particular (slightly overpriced) speaker: https://www.avforums.com/review/sony-srs-x99-wireless-speakeā€¦

JB Don't have to price match
I ended up buying a tv from the good guys due to the attitude of my local store
    they lost a sale

    Buy it from Myer?

      Buy it from Myer?

Yep, if I go ahead with that one I'll pick it up from Myer.

You are right about the attitude. I first asked if there were any wireless speaker sales coming up and I got the dismissive reply "wouldn't know buddy".

        yep, typical sales rep attitude
they could have easily beaten in for you, maybe try another store and see how your luck goes mate

I bought an LG 55 inch 4k UHD Tv, I found it at videopro, went into jb to price match and they laughed at me, nah mate thats below our cost price

Irony was 2 days later it was on sale, so he was full of BS, and his hot price still wasnt as good as the day I bought it

I ended up beating the 995 price by Videopro and got it for 970 at the good guys
pretty happy with the price drop (they wanted 1150 for it) and he bent over backwards to ensure he could have it ready for me

I was surprised he didn't even try to sell to me. He could have said something like "best we can do is $850"… but nope, he looked like he was thinking how he wouldn't have to be working as a salesman dealing with plebs once his band hit it big, or whatever it is he does outside of work between getting new tatts.

          @PowerPants:
Don't stress, the same happened to me 2yrs ago.
I went in to get a new TV from JB Hifi (at a popular/respected spot). There were no sales on, but there was one crappy Panasonic unit that they had for ages collecting dust. It was only worth around $800 for it, so I offered them $850, seeing as I didn't want to spend $2,000 on a TV at the time.

Nope. Sorry mate. Best I can do is to lower the price down from $970 to $900.
          Got the manager.
He laughed, and said his worker offered it too cheap, and countered with $920.
I said No Thanks, and walked off. I knew it was a rip off above $850, they knew it too.

I went to get another, better TV at Good Guys at a slightly cheaper price.
Only problem was their stock and distance. But it closed before I could get there.
I thought, no rush, I'll get one next week instead.

Next week Thursday morning before work, noticed there was a different JB near my house.
They had a sale going on, 20% off.
Got a much better LG TV that was around $1600, for $1100 with an extended warranty (it was cheap, so it didn't matter).
After work, I went back to the original JB and the same salesmen were there.
No-one wanted the Panasonic, and they were desperate to sell it.
They slashed its price down to $800.
The manager remembered and approached me.
          I got the last laugh.

        • JB is highly variable store to store. My local will bend over backwards to get a price match where others couldn't come close. Even online only prices. Went to JB a while ago, said they will price match no worries, gets to the desk and he asks for the manager, wait 5 minutes, told nope. This was for Sandisk extreme pro, super over priced at JB.

JB Don't have to price match

Isn't it false advertising if they bait customers by claiming to price match and then fail to price match?

      • I don't think they advertise that they price match do they? In my case I was asking anyway… I think it's ok to ask for a better price even if they don't state specifically that they price match.

      • Only if JB claimed to price match, which they don't.

Why do people spend time trying to price match? Price beat I understand, but spending more time, just to match the price seems totally redundant.

Only reason I can think of is discounted GCs, but OP hasn't mentioned that.

Discounted giftcards is why I do it, also if I'm in a particular location where for example, there was JB but not Myer.

AMEX credit back offers. I price matched Miele Cat&Dog at HN against Myer last Dec, and got $100 credit back from AMEX.

Why do people spend time trying to price match?

Sometimes its just more convenient to buy from one physical store over another (if you aren't buying online). In my case I was already at the shopping centre to get some stuff from Coles and my car was parked there. If I buy online from an online-only retailer I could get it even cheaper still. I might do that after having a good listen to the product in JB.

Edit: Why does the comment box ask me if I'm associated with Myer? Is that automatic? (I'm in no way associated with Myer, I am associated with general tightasses.)

      • Yes, automatic for everyone.

i remember the good old days of JB in the early 90's when you could walk in and haggle for a sony 66cm CRT and get a VCR included for $900

    • Man, those days are long gone! I remember lusting after giant Trinitron CRTs.

  • JB Hi-Fi is always late on price drops

  • Doesn't matter Myer or JB. always shop around before purchase to save your money.
