Xiaomi Mi5 --> GeekBuying, GearBest, Banggood (CH ROM VS GLOBAL VS INTERNATIONAL)

Hey guys just looking into buying a xiaomi Mi5 off one of these websites and I'm just wondering if anyones had experience with buying phones off them? There seems to be 3 different categories for ROMS the same phone Chinese ROM, Global ROM, and International edition however I'm not sure if this is the same as (Global ROM). A few reviews have said on gearbest that it's a custom gearbest global rom which is locked and pretty shitty. Obviously because this is quite an investment I just want to make sure I'm not buying a shitty chinese piece of plastic. I just want to be sure that I can get updates with a stable ROM while also grabbing it for a low price as listed here

  • Get the China Dev rom as it speeds up the unlocking process.

Assume you are just going to put CM 14 on it rather than MIUI?

    • educate me

Pretty much everything you need to know is here.

plenty of rom's and kernels on XDA/

you will need to do your own research for loading roms and know ABD commands / fastboot and also how to load USB drivers
XDA forums have sticky threads that provide step by step help, please ensure you read the consequences of unlocking

Furthermore, the hardware is the most important thing at the end of the day, the rom is the only "shitty part", with the huge XDA community you can get quite stable roms and load them very easily once you unlock the bootloader and load recovery onto your phone, the best part is there are very little dramas if you follow the instructions and bricking the device is not as common today as earlier days

I have the Mi Max with global rom, seems fine, no spyware or bloatware and works perfectly, I do however want to change the rom due to a bluetooth headset issue and will most likely go with a 7.0 N rom off XDA

what do you want from the phone? the ability to customize the rom / change roms / develop roms - unlock bootloader required
Do you want a phone that will work fine and not create headaches - stick with global rom, it works, does the job and has reasonable update frequencies

        • I had exactly the same issue(s) as you. Phones calls never got routed through my car's Bluetooth. However music played fine. Plus, I prefer stock Android notification shade and toggles.

Every Nougat ROM I have tried have bugs, but not bad enough to make you consider going back to stock. Sometimes, waking the phone results in a blank screen. Also, the built-in EQ would sometimes not work until you toggle it off and back on. That it doesn't have its own icon is an annoyance.

I might try the MIUI beta ROM based on Nougat today.

      • But should I buy the untouched phone with the chinese ROM and flash it myself or should I buy their global ROM with it already flashed onto the phone?

        • I highly recommend you buy the one with a global ROM if you want access to Google Play Services.

        • @albert0pia: but I could also just download google play onto the one with the chinese rom

  • Yes you could. On a separate note, can you read Chinese?

    • a bit not excessive amounts though lol

      • Very well then. Brace yourself - you'll be seeing quite a lot of Chinese throughout the OS.
