Car manual disappeared, possibly auction house?

So I've been trying to sell my car for a few months, and haven't had much luck even though it's the cheapest car with equivalent miles on Carsales (by several thousand $) and is in good condition. I had an instant offer from carsales and eventually decided to accept it. I took the car to the Pickles auctions, as directed, and of course they low balled the offer to a level that was unacceptable. As I was about to leave the guy who inspected the car (he took it away for 15 minutes) told me my manual (leather bound booklet) wasn't in he glove box (the service schedule was however). Now I know the booket was in the glove box the week before I went to the auction house, as someone looking at the car went through the documentation. I didn't check the glove box because I hadn't been in the car for a week, so I couldn't accuse the auction house of taking it really. Has anyone had anything like this happen before? It's not the end of the world, as I have the important service booket, but it has certainly left a sour taste in my mouth.

It sounds like he was threatening you that if you didn't go ahead with accepting his offer he wouldn't give back the manual.

I would go back and tell him you ae going to the police right now unless he gives the manual back. Common tactic.

    • At somewhere like Pickles? Would they risk their reputation?

Maybe it was the boogie man.

  • New or old car sales. You need to remove anything removable.

When I test drove a car last year the sales guy said "sorry SAT nav won't work unless I go with you" as people would take the DVD. Apparently even take the car mats…
