Moving from Tasmania to Calgary

early 2019 my partner and i are considering moving to Calgary, we will also be coming with a 2.5 yr old Alaskan Malamute. we want to know what area is close to the university, thats dog friendly and generally a good neighborhood friendliness and job wise. if anyone has flown a dog around this size over to the USA or Canada how much it cost as Qantas wont quote me unless i book it first. also are there any quarantine periods for dogs coming over from Tasmania, he if and will be perfectly healthy and the vet will give him vaccinations before we leave, we just dont want to leave him by himself as he is coming from a house with two other dogs to being completely by himself on top of the stress of moving.

Both my partner and i have been working at Woolworth's for the past 2-3 years and have good references but we need to know how hard it will be to get a job part time that would pay for basic rent, food ect. obviously we understand that we would only get a retail or restaurant type of job due to not having any qualifications.

any other details about calgary and specific cities would be greatly appreciated.

thank you in advance

      Because it's Australia Day.

        Even in Calgary?

OP will report back in 2019.

I think you'd have better luck in a Canadian forum for some of those questions.

agreed, unless look for expat forums on other sites

  • In 2019? Calgary why move there? Friggin harsh winters great if you want to get into dog sledding. Tassies a nice place. Moving OS with your dog check out Jetpets they handle everything.

  • Calgary sounds just a weird place to move though. I hope you know that winters there are brutal as heck and it pretty much won't be above freezing in winter. At night time, going to be like the Arctic.

Anyway you should try the Canadian forums.

If we may ask, why there?

  • calgary is possible the worst city in canada to be arriving in without any pre arrangements employment opportunities. severely affected by the oil and gas industry turmoil, there are hundreds, thousands reportedly highly skilled locals and immigrants applying for entry level menial roles at the airport/retail/anywhere.

if you have no skills, no education/qualifications - outside already possessing citizenship by descent, you'll have almost no chance of a visa outside a working holiday visa in which case you cannot bring any pets (and why would you given the stress on such a long haul experience plus potential quarantine requirements upon return to AU).
