I'm guessing this is not the borosilicate glass Pyrex but rather the soda lime variant? You used to be able to use Pyrex glass on the stove top and in the oven but they switched to reduce costs. From the wikipedia page:

Pyrex glass cookware manufactured by World Kitchen is made of tempered soda-lime glass instead of borosilicate.[12] World Kitchen justified this change by stating that soda-lime glass was cheaper to produce, is the most common form of glass used in bakeware in the US, and that it also had higher mechanical strength than borosilicate—making it more resistant to breakage when dropped, which it believed to be the most common cause of breakage in glass bakeware. Unlike borosilicate, it is not as heat-resistant, leading to the potential increase in breakage from heat stress. European Pyrex is still made from borosilicate

Oh great, thanks very much, I just accidentally learned something :(

      • +1

Me too, now I am doubly mad at my cats for breaking 2 of my old ones with thier horsepaly.

        • +6

          Cats are jerks

        • +2

@Wampus: They are HUGE jerks, build a wall to keep them out.
They are so fake, they are fake huge jerks.

        • +1

@malouphix: and make them pay for that wall too

        • +2

Agreed. Better Google and find it out for yourself, rather than relying on wikipedia.

How about the university of Delaware?

You're right to be distrustful of media. Most media outlets are manipulative. Wikipedia is manipulated by special interest groups and other stakeholders with a vested interest. However, this topic seems straight forward.

You can get borosilicate glass at Kmart (non Pyrex $6 for a 3L dish) and Harvey Norman (Pyrex - $10 for 1L). You just need to read the fine print. Eg.

Wikipedia allows for a request to verify a fact on a page with the citation needed tag.

So yes, anyone can edit it, but you can fact check it at the source yourself, disregard it if no source is provided, or mark it as citation needed for it to be fact checked.

I recommend you go and do a test. Find a page, edit something to make it untrue and see how long your change remains there for.

        • @DeWalt:

Guessing that you're referring to this $6 3L dish at Kmart? http://www.kmart.com.au/product/3l-glass-rectangular-baking-…

Thanks for the heads up :)

    • I'd say it would be the soda-lime variant.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrex
Check the pic, the soda-lime variant has a blue tinge to it.

Also, many complaints from Australia of exploding pyrex as mentioned in this article
      https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/08/pyrex.html
Seems only the UK and some European countries have the borosilicate glass Pyrex.

So next time you're at the garage sale check out the Pyrex for the older more heat resistant type :)

      • Sorry for the repeat, but apparently not true.
        http://www.harveynorman.com.au/pyrex-1l-glass-mixing-bowl.ht…

        • Thanks for the info.

        • I just had a look at the products in my local in Woolworths.

Based on the color tint of the glass and the Pyrex logo as described in the wikipedia article, the mixing bowls they have are borosilicate and the store and microwave type bowls with the plastic lids are soda-lime glass as are the measuring jugs.

    • +3

      mmmmmmmm soda lime. sounds refreshing

    • +1

The plastic for the lids on the newer ones is also of poorer quality than the old ones.

Some MBA at Pyrex decided to save money in the short term while the brand cruises on its old reputation.

    • When I was a kid, all pyrex glass you can put on stove top or bake. Unfortunate to hear they are lowering their quality

    40% off some Pyrex bowls

    which ones?

    • +5

Not the ones that are not.

      • +4

What about the ones that are?

        • +4

          40% off.

        • +4

          @ms:

          Thanks.

        • @jv:

          You're welcome.

        • +4

          @ms:

I think the description should be changed to make it clear that only the ones that are discounted are 40% off and the ones that are not discounted are full price… Otherwise it's confusing.

        • @jv:

Do you want to report it to mods or shall I?

        • @ms: i have a headache now

  • What I want are the old style glass jugs with the wide spout that were so much better for pouring.

    • +3

What I want are the old style glass jugs

      My wife has those.

Not a fan of the new ones. Too small. Hard to grip.

      • uh wot, previous comments suggested jv is female. so i can't trust wikipedia and now i can't trust ozb! the sky is falling on my head

        • +2

          You've been Trumped

        • +4

jv could still be female with a wife, it is 2017.

        • +1

@stormii: good point. but not legalised in aus yet? no wait. wiki. cannot trust..

        • @justin_tsoi: With all the cheap air fares on this site, I am sure eloping to a country that allows it would end up cheaper than a conventional wedding anyways.

Edit: Don't you think it is strange Centrelink, and I assume the taxation department recognize same sex defacto relationships financially, yet they are not allowed to be recognized by law with marriage, I feel there is a great injustice here. If you cannot get married, then why should you take a financial hit when being means tested because you are living in sin?

        • @jv: Grab them by the post

        • @stormii: injustice? because tax is decades in front on social issues like this? yet behind in others e.g. taxing profits of foreign entities?

        • Did you just assume his comment that assumed his gender? If so cool.. Come at me famininists

      • To clarify, I'm not talking about the new style jugs which taper from wider at the top to a narrow base.

I meant the older style jug where the base is has only a slightly smaller diameter than the top. The spout on these has shrunk significantly over time.

You can tell which ones are which - the green label with 'PYREX' logo in all capitals are the Borosilicate glass - they'll have a 'Made in France' logo on them
    See: https://wowpmediaaae.azureedge.net/content/wowproductimages/…

The llue labeled stuff with the 'pyrex' logo in lowercase are the soda lime glass and will have a 'Made in USA' logo.
    See: https://wowpmediaaae.azureedge.net/content/wowproductimages/…

Generally speaking the only Borosilicate Pyrex you can get in stores here are the bowls - any of the measuring jugs or food storage stuff are the cheaper soda lime glass.

  • They should re-brand the USA made ware to FAKEREX or SHITREX or PYRITE like fake gold.

  • I swear whenever there's a Pyrex deal people have the same borosilicate vs soda lime glass discussion in the comments every time.

    • OzB <3 Circular Conversations.

      • Safer to be in the circle than out.. Or so i have heard.. I am sure an ozbargainer can back me up some on this.

        • I live living on the edge ;)

        • +1

          @stormii: me tloo

    • hmmm Japanese eneloops vs chinese eneloops …… must be the same people doing the borosilicate vs soda lime glass discussion.

    • That's not surprising. Pyrex is an old brand which still retains a good reputation.

Many people are still not aware that there are two different qualities of product being sold under the same brand.

  • Um… If it's "the most common form of glass used in bakeware in the US"… then why does it explode? I have a bunch of this with blue plastic lids and it's used in the oven all the time. WHEN does it explode? While it's in the oven, when you take it out, when you sit it on a cold sink just out of the oven…?

Edit: And the freezer for that matter. Cook in it, freeze meat in it…

    • WHEN does it explode?

Only when subjected to extreme stress, whether that be a thermal or mechanical stress.

Ordinary non-toughend glass will crack with a modest thermal stress e.g. a drinking glass taken out of a hot dishwasher and filled with chilled water.

As you have noted, toughened glass is fit for purpose, you can use it in the oven and the freezer. However the process that produces toughened glass stores elastic energy in the glass so when it does break it generally shatters explosively. I've seen this happen with toughened class car windows. My guess is that these stories of exploding Pyrex would either be caused by a defective product containing a bubble or crack which weakens the glass or user error like taking it from the oven and putting it in water or dropping onto concrete.
