2011 Ford Territory - Audio Cutting out

Hi all,

Looking for some advice from community prior to taking my car into dealer for help, on the off-chance someone's had a similar issue and solved it.

I have a 2011 Ford Territory - stock audio system (Interior Command Centre - ICC). Over the past few days, I have intermittent issues with audio cutting off. Symptoms:

  • Audio starts fine when car is turned on (radio, USB, etc., all sources are fine)
  • After a while driving (anywhere from 2 mins to 20 mins) audio will stop entirely
  • ICC stays on, showing name of radio station, volume control, etc. - can even change station or audio source, but there is no sound
  • All other functions controlled by the ICC (e.g. air con) keep working without issue, only audio is affected
  • Audio will not return until car is switched off at ignition and then turned on again

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks.

  • Had same issue on my old Terry… was a faulty speaker, the speakers in the car are on a loop, if one fails they all stop working.

    • Thanks jimbobaus.

From your experience, is there an 'easy' way to diagnose this? Or workaround it (e.g. identify faulty speaker and disconnect it from the loop)?

The way i found out it was my speaker,
was i d/c'd one and tested stereo.. becuase i removed it from the loop and there was no error within the loop anymore it worked, turned out i had shorted one of the speakers, i ran with only one rear speaker for about 2 weeks and never had the issue again, in end i went to a local audio place and got a speaker upgrade done (was like 200 for the whole car)

        • Thanks for the advice. Will check speakers one by one - looks like a pretty fiddly process!

          @shortarmsdeeppockets:

Firstly the speakers are not on a loop they are all wired individually, however Jimbobaus is correct when he says that if one speaker is faulty all 4 speakers can stop working. there is a very good chance that's it's a faulty speaker. I would put some audio on and listen to all 4 speakers (make sure you have the balance and fader set to 0 ) listen for anything that sounds odd like low volume or distorted audio (get your head next to the speaker). if one of the speakers sounds suspect that's the speaker you need to replace or if you don't care that much just disconnect it (the suspect speaker) and the other 3 speakers will work fine.

        • @mr_fjackson:
What i meant by loop.. is in the Territory they are connected in some way, not sure of the technical term but from my understanding as when one goes they tend to all go.

      • Maybe much around with the fade and balance, and if no sound comes from one area, that is your likely culprit?

        • much = mess ?

your right that would also work but the speaker might still make noise, but it's very unlikely to sound the way it should. It could also be a fault in the head unit (Interior Command Centre) but that's unlikely.

        • @mr_fjackson: much = muck

  • Thanks to all for advice. Seems to be a faulty speaker after all. Now to find someone that knows what they're doing to replace it… :-)
