What Phone to Buy - Under $200?

Hi,

I recently had a Lenovo K3 Note which had a problem and was therefore sent back for warranty. Anyway the seller has given me the option of a new Lenovo K3 Note or a full refund. I was going to take the new Lenovo as I been quite happy with it and how it works, but I am wonder what is the equivalent of that now?

Back when I got that it was the best phone for under $200, what is the best phone for under $200 now?

Thanks,

Take the refund and get a Xiaomi instead.

Assuming you want a 5.5" inch size Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 or 4 are the best picks, though you may wish to get the Snapdragon variants which do cost more, but are better. The Redmi Note 3 Pro Special Edition supports Band 28.

    • Thanks for the reply. Size doesn't bother me. I just want the phone to be snappy and take clear photos.

Is there any Chinese spyware on Xiaomi phones? I assume they need to be reflashed with a international rom as the rom preinstalled will be full of crap ware?

      • I got my Mi Mix from the same store a few days ago and did not notice any spyware. It was the global ROM which immediately got an update to MIUI 8.1 marshmallow and noticed it was a relatively clean rom with not much in terms of bloat.

If you don't like MIUI for any reason, you can replace with CM14 or Lineage OS. The bootloader is locked though and you will need to unlock it from here

        • How much did you pay for Mi Mix?
          Hows your.experience with the camera?

        • @Edsanwong:

199 us with DHL option and includes smart case and tempered glass protector

          Abit expensive

@scrimshaw: Is it Mi Max or Mi Mix?
          Mi Mix is showing US$700+

        • @akd:

          Mi Max, sorry.

I second the Xiaomi Redmi Note. They're fantastic phones for the price. I got a redmi note 4 just last week and it is such a beautiful phone for only AUD230. A little over your $200 budget but it works great. There is a new redmi note 4 with the snapdragon variant which is coming out in a couple of days or maybe it's already out, not 100% sure. The one I got is the mediatek one I think. Haven't compared the two so can't say how they compare, but I think it'll be minimal.

Granted the camera on the redmi isn't great, and I know that from reviews before I made the purchase but I normally use my DSLR for proper photos anyway so it really isn't an issue for me.

There is no spyware and bloatware as long as you have the international rom installed. Some will come pre-installed but it's pretty easy and straight forward to install it yourself also.

        • I have bought Redmi note 4 for my wife with mediatek x20 processor and 3gb RAM. I have Redmi note 3 pro with SD650.

Redmi note 4 has been release with SD625, which isn't really much different to sd650 variant but however they claim that sd625 is more optimised and has slightly better performance and efficiency

@codename47: Yeah and it comes with 4gb of ram so maybe that will increase performance a little too, but I got mine already and it works fine for me. I bought the redmi note 2 in September 2015 and never had any issues with it. Wasn't going to change it until this year but late last year I dropped it and the screen completely shattered. I've never broken a screen in my 10+ years of mobile phone use so I was absolutely gutted. Took it to China to fix it thinking it'll be cheap, not really, AUD40 bucks and a month later just after Christmas the backlight on the phone totally gave out and started giving me strange colours and the phone became quite dim. Was thinking of holding out for a bit longer and get the Mate 9 but it was too painful to use and the Mate 9 is way too expensive. Decided to get the Note 4 two weeks ago on ebay with the thanks20 voucher.

        • @jerrizhao: Phones are not sturdy these days at all. They are made to break man. Friend's S7 was repaired last friday by samsung for $250 with new screen. He dropped again on Saturday and it completely got wrecked and he ended up paying 600 to vodafone to get a new plan.

I am on Redmi note 3 pro and it has been amazing.I also had redmi note II with no issues at all. Sold it in start of 2016.

I have purchased about 18 units of Redmi note 3, Redmi pro and Redmi note 4 for mates and work colleagues and everyone loves it.
Did you get yours already ?

        • @codename47: Yeah I got my note 4 already. The ebay shop is based in Australia so as soon as I ordered, they couriered the phone over from their warehouse in Hong Kong, received it in two days. So much better than buying from Everbuying and Tiny Deals etc. I love it, the fingerprint thing is nice. The aluminium body feels luxurious. I decided to get a screen protector and a case this time because even though it is a cheap throwaway phone, I still love it and don't want to change it for at least a year and half.

The only problem I had with my note 2 was it didn't work very well with my Huawei watch. The bluetooth connection always drops out, no idea why. Tested again with this one and it's been working really well since, so I've switched back to the Huawei watch now. The only thing is I haven't been able to find that many nice watch faces yet.

        • What is their ebay store called? I can't find it can you give me a link please?

        • @Macgyver: This is the link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Xiaomi-REDmi-NOTE-4-Dual-SIM-64GB….

It also comes in silver, you can just click on the seller's name and search for other phones in their store. Also do another ebay search because I'm not sure if they're the cheapest as the prices with these Chinese phones fluctuate up and down all the time. They might be the cheapest two weeks ago, but might not be today.

was the problem the touch screen dying along the right hand side?

    on a side note:

I recently had a Lenovo K3 Note which had a problem

    username does not check out….

    • Display easily fixed with a paper clip. OP is aware of this.

      • Yeah that is exactly what happened. It is a known issue is it?
Paper clip didn't fix it this time round sadly.

        • Mine has the same issue. I've just received a replacement touchscreen from aliexpress which I'll swap over soon.

I've read a lot of threads about it happening. In India k3 notes are sent to the lenovo service centre for screen replacement. Unfortunately Aus doesn't have such a centre.
