Lenovo Tab 2 A10-30 for eBook/comic reading (or something else sub-$300?)

Looking at the Lenovo Tab 2 A10-30 from Officeworks ($188 at the moment) pretty much solely for ebooks and comics. Can anyone who has used one comment on the display quality, is it up to the task?

Not sure what other options I have, I could go up to $200-250, maybe $300 if the screen is that much better, but I'd prefer not to. Chinese tablets seem to have nice specs for the price but reviews often point out the fact the screens aren't fully laminated which seems like a bad thing when my main use for it is reading.

Update:

Tossing up between the Chuwi Hibook Pro and Hi 12 now. The former has a higher res, fully laminated screen, while the latter has a larger screen and stylus support (which I won't use), as well as full size USB ports which may come in handy. Decisions, decisions.

    I assume you're reading manga :)

We have one of these as digital signage / product cataloging and they work fine for reading and such. However, when you compare it to my ASUS memopad FHD 10.1 (1920 x 1200) the Lenovo's 1280 x 800 display looks fuzzier.

IMO, your manga reading experience is much better on a 1920 x 1200 display, because in portrait mode that gives you an extra 400 pixels lengthwise (a big difference). You should have no problems looking for a chinese tablet with a high res display. TechTablets has reviewed many of them.

    • Maybe some manga, but mainly American comics, which is why I was looking for 10 inch+ tablets.

I was worried about the resolution thing with the Lenovo that you mentioned, so I'll definitely look at the higher res ones. TechTablets is actually the site which clued me in on the laminated vs non-laminated screen thing, so I figured I'd ask and see if anyone has any opinions on the impact when it comes to reading (since TechTablets mainly reviews regarding general usage).

      • Offtopic but check out euro comic scanlations (mostly french comics) too : https://www.kaskus.co.id/thread/000000000000000003870846/sca… they're mostly found on this indonesian forum thread but I know those download aggregators will provide links to them, not sure if they're up on those comic reading sites e.g. readcomics.tv

  • Yeah me too always wanted a cheap tablet to read epub, pdf magazines and Manga.

  • mipad 2 would do the job fine
I would take results from reviews with a grain of salt imho

    • Mipad 2 is 8 inches, so not sure about reading comics on that (American comics are about 10 inches IIRC). The Mipad 3 is said to be 9.7 inches which is probably better, but I have idea how much it will cost or even when it will be available.

      • Remembering screen resolution is much better on that 8 inch tablet

        • Well, at least with reading comics on a 7" tablet, you need to pan around the page to read the whole thing, which is annoying. I don't think the 8" is big enough to avoid that problem.

        • @Diji:

          Once again resolution
          Fits more to the page
I've got a mipad2 and it's brilliant for commics and just about everything else

        • @shawncro 222: Are you reading American comics? I looked it up and the average comic is 12" diagonally, so reading it on a tablet you're shrinking it down by 4" diagonally. I find it hard to believe that the text is even readable like that.

I bought this tablet last xmas. There are a few niggling issues that I have mainly overcome: It is quite heavy (I prop it up on some pillows) The glare from the screen can be annoying, but not excessively. You could read in a dim room which helps, but can be annoying if your switching to physical books. I had an issue were the "screen off" button would have to be pushed a few times, but that seems to of just been a firmware issue. Its alright for reading pdf's and ebooks. "fbreader" is the best e-reader/pdf viewer I have ever used. Oh yeh, It has really good battery life.

    • Nice to hear about the battery life. Thanks for your reply!

  • Second hand samsung galaxy tab s might be up your alley.. Tab s2 is more expensive and actually lower resolution and screen size.. For the first generation tab s you have 8.4 and 10.5 inches to choose from i assume the 10.5 will fit you quite perfectly. I saw some on gumtree for like $200-250 one time and even one as low as $180.. Used condition of course.. I would have taken it but out of money haha lol

None in my area unfortunately and I don't trust Gumtree for anything other than inspecting the goods in person and paying cash.
