Google Pixel vs Nexus 6P: Is the Pixel worth the extra $$$?

Hi guys,

On March 15th I am moving from Brisbane to London for a duration of time which is yet to be decided. I've had my Nexus 5 for 3 years and it has served me well, so I am hoping to stick with a Google phone. I don't need to use the phone for anything special other than basic social media, calls/text, email and taking photos (though I will be picking up a new camera soon, stay tuned for that forum topic) - but a good camera is always a plus as I will be doing a lot of travel.

This is where I need help:

  • What are people's thoughts on the Pixel vs the 6P? The cost of the Pixel is a little off putting ($1k+), but the 6P is still sitting at around the $650 mark from most retailers. Google Assistant isn't something I could see myself using a whole lot, so that's not a big draw card. My only concerns with the 6P are that (a) it's a bit bigger than I would like and (b) that I'm concerned that the phone will become outdated a lot sooner, especially in terms of updates. So my question is - is it worth paying an extra $350+ for a phone that is, for my expectations of use, only slightly better? Would love to hear from people that have used both phones.

  • Second point is: where is best to purchase from keeping in mind (a) cost and (b) the fact I am moving overseas? I saw the thread a few days ago about the guy who was travelling and his Pixel died - the last thing I want to do is to buy a phone now and be unable to make a warranty claim because I am not in the Country of purchase.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

xiaomi note 3 international edition, $230 is much better choice IMO. Pixel is a joke for ozbargainers.
Nex5 was the last true value nexus (except when the 5x dropped in price so dramatically).

  • Pixel will give you another year of OS and Security patch updates compared to the 6P/5X. The camera on Pixel is fantastic for photos.

I recently upgraded from Nexus 5 to Pixel and it is a solid device. On performance, camera, build quality, I rate it 2X better than the Nexus 5. Price is definitely steep (more than double of N5's original price) so the value for money is not there at all. That said, Pixel is the only decent option for those who prefer a direct-from-Google phone without any third-party mods and custom firmware.

I'd recommend a One Plus 3T, honestly I was super hyped for the Pixel, but it's turned out to be a disappointment, just doesn't feel like it's worth 1k+.

The 6P is an excellent device, definitely much better value for money vs the Pixel. If it were straight up 6P vs Pixel, I'd say 6P (if you don't mind the ugly back and large size!)

However the One Plus 3T is amazing, they really outdid themselves. Looks great and has mostly stock Android, but the catch is no local warranty and such.

Let us know what you end up grabbing.

The regular OnePlus 3 (64GB) is better Price:Product or Value proposition.
The slightly more expensive 3T does give you slight upgrades around, and the upgrade to 128GB is actually affordable.
So anyone looking for a OnePlus, look for the 3 (64GB) or the 3T (128GB) in terms of Value.

However…. look at the radio frequency (bands).
There's no Band 28 which is a big blow to 4G coverage, especially Telstra and Optus.
It's hard to recommend this superphone without the proper coverage, but everyone has their reasons.

I got the Oneplus 3T from Android Enjoyed for under AUD 600.. So far it looks like an EXCELLENT phone. The 6P is like two years old and the 3T beats the 6P in all aspects. Even the atrociously priced Pixel loses to the Oneplus 3T in every performance or benchmark test except in the Camera category. I'm not much of a photographer but the 3T's camera looks great to me.

With respect to 4G coverage on band 28, that is disappointing.. But I personally never even use 4G (I notice more battery consumption and 3G works well enough for me for all my needs)

  • Nexus 6P always had a bendgate problem so I'd recommend getting a case if you're hedging towards the 6P

    • Nexus 6P user for a year here - no bendgate problem!

  • Pixel can upload unlimited google photos and videos.

    • All google accounts can.

Can pixel users upload photos/videos in their original quality free of charge?

      • Doesn't resize to smaller files

      • Yes, unlimited photos/videos in original quality.

Of course not worth editing to buy a thousand dollars phone.
Just wait 6 month's price will drop like no tomorrow.

Don't be the stupid one and buy newly released overpriced stuffs and make those conglomerates rich.

It's a lot to pay for a device made to spy on you.

    • alright iPhone boy.

        Er, no.

  • This review was really helpful for me when I was trying to decide whether the Pixel was worth the price: https://youtu.be/uzqB5sIUphY

My Nexus 5 was starting to show hardware issues (power button getting stuck etc) but I really liked the faster OS in Google phones. I ended up buying the 6P but it was recently stolen, so I've just ordered a Xiaomi Mi5s. The thing I liked least about the 6P was its weight and size as I couldn't type one-handed and it was exacerbating my RSI. One of the reviews I read described it as a phablet, and they're not wrong. The Mi5s is a very similar size and weight to the Nexus 5 - but has the same camera sensor as the Pixel. The third-party OS is a potential negative but the price was very good value - even cheaper than the Nexus 5 when it came out. I plan on seeing how bad it is before I go to the trouble of rooting it.

  • Samsung galaxy y for the price of two porkrolls

  • I have both phones. Pixel Xl is slightly smaller than the 6P. Some prefer the pixel size. The pixel is significantly snappier. Noticeably smoother to use. Also has a much wider range of accessories locally available. Using both on a daily basis I would definitely get the Pixel.

  • I've just had bootloop issues with my 6P and it seems I'm not the only one. I'm not sure which phone I'm going to replace it with but I'm nervous about the 6P. I previously had a G4, which also bootlooped… 😲
