Qantas Frequent Flyer 0 points (Just had 2 business class return tickets to adelaide so used them up) - Status - Bronze
    Velocity- 3,877 points - Status - Member/Red

    • QFF - 882,000 - Status - Gold/Lifetime Silver - Plan on getting to 1 million points in the next month or so.

      No points with anyone else.

      • At what point can you attain lifetime silver
        That's freaking awesome mayne

        • +1

7000 lifetime status credit gets you to lifetime Silver. I think Silver is useless. For me, Gold is the status to have as it gets you access to the lounges.

I know a lot of people complain about the points being useless or that they can never find any flights - but it just requires knowing how to use the system. I take the whole family (2 adults + 2 kids) on around the world trips every other year (costs about 600K in points) and about $2000 (all up) in taxes. Occassionally, we'll even go on local holidays as well as those points are low, not good value, but still low.

        • @MrHyde: any tips you can give us in regards to booking reward flights

        • +11

          @CI:

The best time to book award flights is about 350 days prior as that is when the flights are released.

Also, if with One World, the best value is the One World award - which costs 140,000 points in economy and allows for 5 stops anywhere in the world in any direction - so it not like the round the world where you can only go in one direction. There is a total distance limit, which is high, so should not be a problem. The only major condition is that that in addition to Qantas, you have to use two other One World airlines. With Cathay, Malaysian, Qatar, AA - that is not hard to do. Also, a stop of less than 24 hours in a location is not counted as a transit and not a stopover for purposes of counting the 5 stops.

Also, if you are Platinum, there is an undocumented perk where you can ring up and they can sometimes release award seats for you.

        • @MrHyde: Just to clarify - you do not have to travel on Qantas for the Oneworld award, it just has to contain two non-Qantas Oneworld partners.

A oneworld Classic Flight Reward is a Classic Flight Reward Itinerary that includes travel on at least two oneworld Alliance Airlines other than Qantas and does not include any travel on any airline that is not a oneworld Alliance Airline.

          (from here)

        • @djkelly69: Thanks for the clarification. Based in Melbourne, most of the flights do require going from SYD and that means MEL - SYD is Qantas, so I've always had Qantas as part of the itinerary anyway.

        • @MrHyde: Yeah I agree it is very likely most people would.

        • @MrHyde: LTS here also. I have a Qantas Club membership for lounge access. It gets suspended when I hit Gold though which is handy because some years I do, some years I don't

        • @CI: Book as far ahead as possible. For the popular routes, they are often snapped up the day they are made available, around 350 days in advance.

        • Isn't status snobbery better posted on flyertalk or ausfrequentflyer?

        • +1

          @sator: I dunno man
But as you can see I am pretty low down the ladder

      • +4

I have left a note in my will for my family with all my accounts and passwords so they can use/transfer where possible if I die :)

        • +32

I may do the same for my Opal card because it still has $16.69 on it.

        • +9

          Look at this rich guy.

        • +14

          @Rodgort: You're not getting any.

        • +7

@PJC: I don't know if being hit by a bus counts as tapping on, certainly tapping out.

        • @ChickenTalon: I'll probably be on the bus.

        • +4

When my dad passed away I called qantas to ask what happens to someones points if they die, they told me they just disappear. I hung up and called back, got someone knew on the phone, identified myself as my dad, they asked me the secret questions (mothers maiden name, DOB, address) satisfied they reset the pin, I logged in and siphoned all the points to my frequent flyer account, it took a couple of years as you can only do 400k each year.

    • What's the point of hoarding so many points, esp Flybuys?Wouldn't it be better have cash in bank?

  • Silver Qantas - 380,000

  • No status with anyone (unless you count that AirBerlin Silver thing that didnt work).

    QFF - 175k
    VFF - 125k
    Amex MR - 135k

  • VIrgin Velocity Platinum 200k

  • VFF - 223k
    QFF - 2k
    United mileage plus - 31k
    Etihad guest - 41k
    Krisflyer - 5k
    Flybuys - 43k
    ANZ rewards -14k

And soon to have 110k amex gateway awards. No status with anyone

  • +1

What is better points wise for international travel, velocity or transferring them to Krisflyer?

  • QFF - 380,050 Platinum - Gold for Life.
    Virgin - 45,100 - scumbag level (red?)
Accor - 2012 (just spent 80K getting 11 free nights at sofitels in the USA) - Platinum.

    No points anywhere else.

  • qff - 330k
    vigin - 10k

  • +3

Jesus how do you people collect so much points??

    • +4

      OzBargain.

    • Likely credit card rewards, and/or business trips.

      • +4

Damm. Most of my business trips are local in train…..
        Wish Opal starts points soon.

    • if you take a few flights overseas each year they quickly add up. I usually go to the US at least once a year plus a few domestic flights for work, add in the odd holiday and it quickly mounts. I regularly spend mine on flight upgrades yet I still have 570k Qantas points.

  • QFF points 867,728
Status credits only 1800/3600 anniversary 28 Feb.
I will never get Platinum One! :(

According to Qantas I can fly first class return from Perth Aus to Philadelphia with my wife on points. There will probably be some taxes involved.

    • Does that include visiting Canberra/Syd to attend a US embassy?

  • Sheesh frequent travellers. 186k on qff no other programs.

  • 289,000 QFF
    Gold status
VA - 12,000 - used them all as VA sucks and I don't earn them anymore

  • 298,500 Velocity points - red status (230k from HL refinance), 20k sign up bonus, the rest earned through amex velocity and nabs velocity premium card.
About 12000 qantas points - no status

  • Qantas Silver (former Gold, trying desperately to reclaim) - 800,000 points, planning to use for some sweet Business/First class to South America
Virgin Bronze - maybe 2000 points, swapped them with a friend in a points transfer, and all the current points goto my wife in Family Sharing
Etihad Gold, from one of those status match deals

    • At ~120k points for F to South America and back, you could book a return and it still wouldn't make much of a dent in your points. What are you waiting for?

  • 480k Velocity. No status.

  • Qantas Frequent Flyer: Life Time Silver w/Qantas Club membership - 210,000 points
Virgin Frequent Flyer: Red - 123,000. Received on a credit card, haven't used the points yet. Never flown VA before. Not sure when I will. Remaining points came from FlyBuy redemptions and various other campaigns (IE, add company to AusPost letters, get 2K points, etc)

  • I dont have any FF points yet.
I do have over a million in amex points.

A friend said to transfer them over to velocity when they have deals like 15% extra for bringing points across.

Not sure I want have them all in one. Would it be best to split them.

  • Zero FF points
did get a toaster from Flybuys though

I Have never flown with Qantas, how do you earn these points do you just have to keep flying with them ?

    • Get a credit card that gives ff points for each $ spent. Many offer bonuses on sign up Platinum gives more points like 1.5 ff points per $. recently joining Qantas FF program was free.

      https://www.finder.com.au/credit-cards/compare-frequent-flye…

      • even without a credit card - velocity points when you buy fuel at BP, qantas points through woolies rewards (used to be good, now not really worth it)

  • +4

I knew it. I knew you would all be jealous.

  • 0, i got a card through being woth optus, never used it though

  • +5

    Um,
    Velocity- 94 points
    Woolworths Rewards- 1200 points.
    I'll get there eventually

  • QFF: ~510,000
    Velocity: ~290,000

    Partner has:
    QFF: ~110,000
    Velocity: ~60,000

No status on each, thanks credit cards!
But have access to Virgin Lounge, AMEX lounge, Centurion lounge etc. with AMEX Platinum Charge Card.

  • +1

    0 just sold them all.

  • 185k with Qantas
3k with Virgin (Just used 72k on flights to Perth return)

No status (but very close to Silver with Virgin)

  • Emirates Skywards - 15,800 / Blue

    Qantas Frequent Flyer - 100 / Bronze
    - Don't really use it, only really acquire points if I shop at WW and remember my ER card.

    Virgin Velocity - 4,406 / Red

  • Qantas Frequent Flyer - 1700 / Bronze
    Virgin - 150 / Poo

  • Family works in the airline industry so when I fly Singapore Air I get nada. :( I rarely fly domestic, at most once a year for the tennis, and it's between Qantas/Virgin.

I fly Qantas thru work which is only 2 or so international flights a year which doesn't attain much other than Silver/Gold.

Personally after experiencing Singapore Air lounges, Qantas are really far behind with quality and service. Plus of course the fact that it can get quite busy.

    Qantas FF - 29,971.
    Virgin Velocity - 1,957.

    • Qantas isn't my preferred carrier; however, on the return leg of my recent work trip I flew Qantas due to them having the best direct flight. They really are Jetstar with a Kangaroo logo - poverty pack airline. The food was horrible, the seats terrible and the entertainment system woeful.

Agree with the lounges too - Qantas really is far, far behind the rest of the league.

  • +1

~750,000 Membership Rewards - Ascent Premium
    ~160,000 Velocity - Silver
    ~80,000 KrisFlyer - Silver

Usually warehouse my points with Amex since there's no expiry. Platinum Charge has at least 1:1 ratio on point transfers on most airlines.

  • +1

Can I add in here for those collecting Qantas points, you can earn 3 points per dollar when booking hotels via Qantas and 1 point per dollar when booking Airbnb via the Qantas website as well.

I feel like not many people know about this especially the Airbnb.

    • +1

i booked air bnb in Greece in Novmber, and 414 qantas points showed up in my account in January. I dont remember ever registering for this!

      • if u booked via qantas website and put in your qff number, you'll get points after your stay. no special registration or enrollment required.

        • I dont remember booking it thru qantas. I booked through airbnb.gr so I could pay in Euros. But still got qantas points

  • +1

I did have ~100,000 QFF points till Qantas stole them due to inactivity, even though i signed up as a paid member when it was 3 years (and they took them after 18months or whatever they reduced it to). So i never fly with Qantas anymore.

  • I have all my eggs in one basket with Qantas

    Platinum
Lifetime Gold (requires 14,000 status credits)

    Current balances
~200k FF Points (I burn them regularly on redemption flights)
~1,500 Status Credits this membership year (renews 31 January)
    ~26,500 lifetime status credits

    • How many flights did you do and past how many years ? Approx I suppose

      • Good question - I've been Platinum for the last 15 years at least without a break.

I rarely fly domestic, so this was achieved through years of international flights - the majority of which were in business (some in first).

There are some years where I did 30+ international returns to Asia and beyond.

        • What do you do for work? Are you hiring?

        • @Xiaoyer: flying a lot is only good the first few times. It becomes draining after years of doing it.

  • Maybe 140k velocity points

  • Does anyone else's employer not allow them to accrue FF points or is it just me? (Still allowed to accrue status credits though)

    • Yes. If your employer pays for your flight and you accrue the points, it's a fringe benefit and your employer may be liable for a fringe benefits tax (that's what they tell me anyway)

    • I know this is true for a lot of government roles (something to do with being a public servant and FF points is seen as a "benefit")

Other companies will accrue the points in their own corporate account and then use the points to offset travel costs.

    • Well.. Aren't the points by-product of your job itself and not fringe benefits? Why do they have to declare it for tax? They are like any other rewards points.

  • Velocity - 172k - Silver status
    QFF - 273k

  • Velocity- 210k points -(from ANZ rewards)
AMEX MR points - 260k points

  • I have 450k points with QFF - was thinking of booking first class on Emirates next year - is this best use of points? Any other suggestions?

    • I haven't done this but everyone tells me it's best to use your points for upgrades rather than buying fares outright.

I don't fly Qantas often so I use mine to claim items from their gift store.

  • Qantas - 140K

I get paranoid with keeping too many points in my account ever since I got hacked and had to fill out a stat dec in order to get all my points back. They really should change their login system to something else other than a 4 digit pin.

    • Yeah it's pretty ridiculous, a 4 digit pin, your QFF number and your last name. They should just change it to a password like everything else on the internet.

  • I got 800K points on Qantas, I'm going to book a trip above first class to the wonderful world of Narnia.
