No GST on JBHifi receipt if paid with gift card?

I bought an Apple Watch from JBHifi and plan to do Tax return when I am going overseas. I didn't notice until today that there is no GST amount on the receipt because I paid with gift card. At least that's the reason store crew told me.

According to regulation of TRS, "gift cards/vouchers are not eligible for tax return (although goods purchased with gift cards/vouchers are eligible for a refund subject to all TRS requirements being met)." It seems my case falls into this, but without a GST amount on the receipt, I am screwed.

I've used gift card to make purchase at many retailers such as Myer, David Jones and The Good Guys, GST is always shown. Do I have a leverage to urge JBHifi to provide a receipt with GST? Or will border protection accept receipt without GST in this situation?

  • Not sure about no GST on gift card transactions, but check this:.

I'd go back to JBHiFi, there should definitely be a GST component on the invoice. Unless of course they didn't charge it and you got the watch cheaper…. but that would be highly unusual.

There is no GST component on the purchase of the gift cards themselves, but there is for goods and services purchased with gift cards, so that GST is not double charged. Hence you should be able to claim the latter at TRS.

The GST has to be there even if paid with GC. You could actually threaten jbhifi as this could be considered as avoiding GST.

Gift cards by themselves aren't claimable. As there is NO GST paid on a gift card. You cant claim it back. GST is paid when you use the gift card to make a purchase (unless its exempt like unprepared food item)

The apple watch purchase is a GST item, hence the ability to get a TRS refund.

Come back if they won't and the discussion will fly.

EDIT - I missed reading your point, that the crew have already told you it shouldnt be there. That's BS, talk with a manager. JB staff aren't known for their intelligence

Seems wierd - I purchased something last year with a GC from JB Hifi and it had the gst … no problem with TRS either.

Did you use a Gift Card or some type of store return card (no idea if JBHIFI has this)? I can see how store credit might have different GST treatment, but the legislation on gift cards is quite clear.

Edit: JB Hifi can also issue a hand-written receipt, which can be used for TRS. I've seen them do this when the purchase was over 1k and they forgot to include the name/address.

I just don't understand how a big retailer could get this wrong (when they've had it working properly in the past). My guess is we're missing something in the story.

  • Why don't you show the Apple watch receipt?

Receipts from purchases made with gift cards at JB Hi-Fi definitely show the receipt. It may have been a printing error, please contact the store and request that they reprint the receipt and ensure that your full details are on the receipt if the total value is above $1000 (name (passport) and address). However if the receipt says "reprint", TRS won't accept it as the original copy. You may need to discuss options with the manager at this point (which involve a duplicate handwritten receipt). GST content is not necessarily required on receipts as the TRS is able to calculate the GST content of any sale. Please confirm with TRS.

Do I have a leverage to urge JBHifi to provide a receipt with GST?

Yes, they are obligated to provide a receipt indicating that GST is paid when requested. It can show GST separately, or a total amount, but clearly indicating that GST is included.

Here are the copy of receipt showing NO GST. The gift card I used is not any special kind or store credit return, it's a normal digital gift card I bought from an online website similar to cashrewards.

I also found a clause on JBhifi's T&C page https://www.jbhifi.com.au/Gift-Cards/Gift-Card-Terms-and-Con… saying "The value shown on this card includes GST." which seems tricky and dodgy. All other retail's gift cards don't include GST.

    • I'm not even sure why we're discussing whether GST is paid on a gift card purchase or not because you aren't trying to claim TRS for a gift card purchase.

      • because gift card can not be claimed for TRS

    • I'm not sure why it's in the GC T&C since it refers to the GST on goods paid by GC, not the GC itself, which is like cash. Maybe JB only sells GST included goods. Anyway I don't think it's to do with the GC, but JB screwing up and not giving you a receipt with your name and address. Get them to fix it, like hypie said.

    • Hi mate, sorry to bring up this old thread. Just wondering did you get it sorted out? I'm trying to do exactly that with JB hi-fi giftcard and TRS…. Thanks!

  • Tax return when I am going overseas.

I don't get it. Why do you want to do your tax return before going overseas? Tax returns aren't due until another six months.

    • :). Also:

      border protection accept receipt

I think they have other things to worry about. I guess all those phrases get jumbled up by users.

  • Maybe some clever accountant has figured out how to train their computers to process a Refund on the Gift Card, and sell the Item at no charge. Extra 10% profit

  • They do have your "Tax Invoice" under your orders page that includes the gst component if that helps.

  • Something similar was discussed in a previous thread. Their "tax invoice" is not compliant with ATO tax invoice requirements.

The method of payment has no bearing on whether GST is applicable or not.

  • The reason this particular receipt has no GST on it is because this is a customer order. When you pick it up you should have been given a new printed A4 sheet which is your new tax invoice which has the GST on it and also the new date for warranty purposes.

  • But wouldnt you already paid GST when you buy the gift card. Why would there be GST on the goods purchased using gift cards as if you paid the same amount of GST twice???

edit: nvm just checked a tax invoice on gift cards i bought, the gift card purchase doesnt contain gst

    • Most likely in accounting way, it's not a sale - that's why no GST, but it's a Cash in for the company in exchange for a loan from a customer until they use it - which then it's a sale with GST. Let me know if I'm wrong?

  • Any updates on this, OP? I have the exact same problem as you. Was going to purchase jb actual gift cards with my other-site-isuues jb gift card, because of another dodgy jb practice (not price matching where Gift Card is used).

But didn't know I might run into this other problem of the item's receipt having no gst either printed on it.

Were you able to get another handwritten or printed receipt, or was that accepted with trs?

      Why would that matter..?

Gift cards are treated as cash in their respective stores, can't you price match and then pay with gift card?

But didn't know I might run into this other problem of the item's receipt having no gst either printed on it

100% it will have GST printed on it for goods purchased.

Trs'd a Google pixel this way, although it had like 9 gift cards used to pay for it (the receipt is just extremely long)

Make sure your receipt has the travellers name listed on the receipt if value over $1000
At jbhifi you can get the sales person to add a note

In addition, tax invoices for sales of AUD1000 or more must include the buyer's identity, for example their name or passport number.

      • "Why would that matter..?"

Some things shouldn't matter but do, have seen some posts online to this effect.

"100% it will have GST printed on it for goods purchased."

I haven't checked out OP's links, but this whole post was made because op's purchase didn't have GST details on the receipt. Thus, potentially, he (and now I) was worried that getting a GST refund under TRS would be difficult.

Further, if you read above, JB hi-fi seemed to be avoiding GST by writing on their page that the gift cards are inclusive of GST. This effectively arms to allow them to make an extra 10% on sales made with gift cards.

"Trs'd a Google pixel this way, although it had like 9 gift cards used to pay for it (the receipt is just extremely long)"

Hmm, good to hear yours had it, likely mine will too, I was just anxious after reading this thread, that mine wouldn't.

Thanks for the tips, my purchase is under $1000 so I assume a normal receipt with gst on it is enough?

        • Thanks for the tips, my purchase is under $1000 so I assume a normal receipt with gst on it is enough?

          Yep.

I believe a loophole to this is to split your receipt into smaller amounts below $1000 (if applicable)
It doesn't say the combined value of TRS application over $1000..

          • @cwongtech: Thanks!

Do you at all know if trs would be possible buying from the good guys eBay store, for example?

This is beyond this thread but I'm hoping they also have good refund/warranty practices because the electronic I'm buying hadn't had a good track record with me so far.

  • You know in some countries like Malaysia, if you dont get a proper GST receipt on purchase then by law your allowed to keep the item for free.

Its a way the government keeps the sellers honest in charging GST by empowering the customer to audit the seller.

  • As long as it says tax invoice on it, you’re fine. Ato won’t care. I think they even will be fine with a sales receipt if it’s under a certain value.
