Bought Pre-Built PC - Parts not Installed Properly

So I recently bought a prebuilt gaming computer from PCByte Ebay as part of a 20% off sale. Computer all working fine and everything all good until I realise the graphics card isn't being detected. Opening the case I'm not sure how to connect (terrible at this stuff and it's hidden away). It definitely isn;t connected as its HDMI ports are not being recognised my monitor nor is the fan spinning on the card. Any advice would be helpful as it's a very expensive card - GTX 1070. Thanks

    talk to them

if you start poking around, then you'll surely break something and then they won't help

    • It's pretty hard to break something on a computer as far as just plugging things in. Unless they remove sticker there's no way to to tell.

    • Yeah I'm sure they'll want to fix it up.

  • First thing I would check is that the power cable is connected to the GPU (Video Card) and that the card has not come loose or dislodged in shipping.. it would be the more common reason I recon if not best giving them a call if you not too sure as they can talk you through it I'm sure…

they can talk you through it I'm sureā€¦

Yeah, pc.byte offering customer service, that seems likely going on their past record.

    1. Fans don't spin on certain cards unless under load.
    2. Check that it is pushed into PCIE slot properly.
    3. Check that power from PSU is plugged into card properly.
    4. You plugged the cords into the GFX instead of the motherboard right?
    1. Is card seated in slot correctly? Visually check with torch (mobile phone torch is fine) and push on it firmly. The card is meant to have a screw holding it on the case chassis, remember to loosen it. You can pull the card out and put it back it to ensure it's correctly fitted. It usually requires a firm pressure to push it in.

    2. Is the additional power cable attached properly (if you're video card requires one, not all GTX 1070s do as i understand? There should be a cable plugged into the video card, ensure it's plugged in all the way.

    3. Is the video card enabled in BIOS? Often BIOS has an option to use either the iGPU or discrete PCI-e card. If iGPU is chosen the PCI-e slot that the card is in is switched off and the OS doesn't think it has a discrete video card. It will be in a section called "peripherals" or similar. I cannot provide step by step instructions as all BIOS are different (although usually they're similar to operate)

  • OP do some research on how to install a gpu, find different videos and different perspectives and see if you could identify the problem and fix it.

  • good luck

  • "I'm terrible at this stuff"

If you're humble enough to admit you don't know what you're doing, then that's a great start. But as with all symptoms, there may be many discrete (and possibly overlapping) sources of problems.

So, as you've outsourced the assembly of your PC, you should also outsource the repairing thereof. A builder should have tested the completed setup before shipping, but that's not provable…

Ring them after performing the basic steps that the others have posted, then explain what you've done, and then follow what they suggest. If at that point it still doesn't work, and you have exhausted their steps, then they'll be willing (and, should it come to it, be legally liable) to accept the complete PC back for diagnosis on their end.

    • don't know what you're doing, then that's a great start.

The next stage is knowing almost nothing but wildly over estimating their own knowledge levels, can't wait!

  • Before touching anything ensure the power is OFF at the wall and unplugged
push the card into the slot
boards that don't have proper support around the PCI Express slot usually have the issue of the card popping out
Blame the courier to be honest

I would push the card into the slot
provide machine power, boot it up and see how you go
pretty straight forward even for the less tech savvy of us :)

I would most likely say the cards "bounced" out of the slot due to a delivery driver manhandling the package
can't really blame pcbyte once it goes into the hands of a courier / auspost but they should be willing to help you and provide support

  • Most GTX 1070s would have lights. Does it light up? If it doesn't then check the cables and reseat the card. Plenty of videos on how to do that and it's pretty simple (just like LEGO).

  • Be sure your cable is plugged into the Graphics card HDMI and not the ON board HDMI from the Motherboard.
