Airline Carry on Limits

So I'm planning to book another flight soon and notice that, as always, Jetstar on their site state that "carry on limits are strictly enforced". having flown Jetstar many times in the past few years I can tell you that this is Bulls@#%.
I often get annoyed seeing people with, sometimes more than 1, large pieces of luggage which is clearly larger than the "legal" limit and can't possibly be less than 7kg. Doubly frustrating when there is no room in the overhead for my "legal" sized carry on as a result.
Now I'm not against people gaming the system and coming out in front .. so much so that I think I'll try winging it myself next flight and see what I can get away with.
What do other travellers think about this? Do you get annoyed also or do you exceed your limit banking on the airline being too slack to enforce their own rules?

On international flights with Jetstar they have always checked the weight of my carry on. Domestic flights they have rarely checked in my experience.

    • I fly JQ internationally monthly between MEL - SIN - KL (And Japan a few times a year). I've never been had my suitcases weighhed internationally. I pack under the limit still, but in all these years, the only time I've seen JQ weigh luggage was on an ADL to MEL flight

  • Tiger: Melbourne mornings: almost always they'll weigh your bags, Brisbane: only if you're pulling suitcase type luggage, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and cairns never seen people's bags weighed.

    • canberra. also weigh your bags at checkin. 7kg max
if you go to the airport with a friend, get them to mind some of your excess stuff. Then get weighed, grab ticket and see friend to load up the rest of the stuff. Just hope you dont get weight again at the gate.

They say "carry on limits are strictly enforced" so that at any time they can check your carry on and refuse without you being able to do much.

You're right, most of the time they won't check and many people get away with it daily but I have also seen people refused. I've never tried to get away with it on purpose, but I have had several flights when they have even said they are fully booked and don't have enough room in the lockers for everyone and since my carry on is at the top end of allowable they wanted it in the hold (not necessarily Jetstar).

I also know the one time I try to get away with a 12Kg carry on will be the time they check. If you're a little over, sure go ahead. If you try to push it you'll end up paying for the extra baggage.

  • I usually use a soft backback for my carry on and it usually fits under the seat in front of me so I don't do the overhead locker dance. My checkin luggage is usually a proper Travel pack. The wheeled thingies are just too awkward for getting up and down stairs.

flying melb to bris about 12 months ago I had approx 25kgs in carry on. 8 laptops. 4 in each piece.

I always fly with my kids. my youngest weighs about 25kgs. yet I pay the same price for her as someone who weighs 100kgs.

    swings and roundabouts

Did you make her carry some laptops to even up the weight distribution?

  • I do get annoyed too. I reckon budget airlines will make so much more money if they paid the airports to enforce this at the departure gates before the security screening. Unfortunately, regardless of whether passengers have oversized or overweight luggage, there simply isn't enough space in the overhead compartment for every passenger if everyone brought their own carry-on luggage. That's why on budget flights, people queue up early to board the flight as soon as they can. I suggest you do the same if it bothers you that much. :)

Just returned from a trip around SE Asia including a few Air Asia and Jetstar flights. People were taking 1 bag up to the counter to be weighed then rocking up to the gate with 2 or 3 bags.

The cheekiest was one person getting his day bag weighed then rocking up to the gate with a 60L backpack with day back attached. Only reason I noticed was because his misses was 10/10

If they dont say that then everyone piles on the aircraft with 4 pieces of luggage and theres no room in the overhead lockers. I quite often get checked but from what I can tell it just depends on whether the staff have time to police it..

The quantity could also be a safety concern as so many passengers have been taking their carry-on luggage with them in the event of an emergency… http://www.airlineratings.com/news.php?id=592 for example..

  • i wished they did it more often
would make me feel better that i did the right thing
instead of perpetuating the belief "i can get away with it too attitude"

this said, i've seen people weighed before boarding
i think they try avoid it as it holds up take off

  • Anyone know if AirAsia is weighing per-kul kul-sgn Hanoi-kul and kul -per?
