      • from the link, the message is - use the phone with activated sim for more than the 5 working days to get $50 gift card.

from Vodafone - "It can take up to 5 working days before you can claim your gift card, after your Vodafone prepaid service is activated and used in the correct handset."

        • this happened to me, after 5 days it's fine.

My colleague did it on the 3rd day after the 1st call……. they might have fix it?

          @Turd:

Got it from retired Gok (or maybe not retired - not sure) - Target

        • @edgar28: The above text was from the link but Vodafone website link - "2. Activate the SIM card included and use it to make at least one phone call."

So it is bit confusing and seems some people have issues claming gift card.

        • @akd:

yeah when you submit, it came out error and stated might need up to 5 days to claim, and mine really requires that…..

  • I think you have to buy the phone from VHA

  • Bought one only to find it can play Pokemon Go but does not allow AR.

Good enough phone at this price and light.

Bummer no 850mhz 3G network support - won't work properly with Aldi's network (Telstra) in rural areas but should be good in metro areas.

Hi is it possible to get this phone unlocked.

    • +1 - good question - nothing much on that WP thread (a few seemed to get lucky and get free unlock code from Voda) - otherwise seems only a $20 one on Ebay but you had to go to a retail store to do this (go figure).

      • it's this ebay seller that can unlock it for $19-$20: www.ebay.com.au/itm/152296812675

        • Nice find - thats a different seller but superior.

There is that chap on OzB called IIRC bagman or similar who does a lot of unlocking - dunno if he'd be worth tracking down and asking.

        • he does it for $19 as well i think, but says that it will be cheaper soon

        • @Condog:

Yeap he dropped it to 17AUD now

        • @Nikko:
He can be contacted via https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/56629 and charges $17.85

        • @FeZZa21:
top marks to Bagman, received the unlock code in 30 mins.

I found this thread on Whirpool
Apparently it has no led notification light, which is a bummer but still a great deal with the $50.00 eftpos.

  • Its locked to Vodafone…:(

        It is. Even says.

"Phone is network locked, unlocking fee applies."

        • +1

          ;(

  • Anyone know what CPU/GPU it has? The gsmarena specs don't match vodafone's spec in other ways (eg 1.1 vs 1.3GHz): http://m.gsmarena.com/huawei_y6-7440.php vs https://shop.vodafone.com.au/mobile-details/huawei-y6-elite-…

The WP thread seems undecided on snapdragon 210 or MediaTek MT6735P with this model: http://m.gsmarena.com/huawei_y5ii-8036.php (which at least agrees with vodafone's 1.3GHz) - WP comment https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?r=51676409…

Someone benchmarked it as comparable to a Snapdragon 600: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?r=51682559…

    EDIT seems to be mt6735, which has a Mali-T720 MP4 @ 650 MHz http://system-on-a-chip.specout.com/l/1166/Mediatek-MT6735

  • Do I need to activate the $40 sim on this specific phone or can I just use any phone and still receive the $50 EFTPOS?

    • -2

      Read the comments.

    • +1

You have to activate on this phone, but what I would like to know is if you could put a $2 sim in it, activate and still get $50 as I don't use Vodafone and would just waste the sim.

      • FAQ

What happens if I buy the phone and use it with a Postpay service or my existing Prepay service?
You will not be eligible for the offer, and you won't be able to submit or redeem a claim.

        • Hmm, I don't think that answers the question. I would put a new sim and activate on the phone, just like I would do with $40 sim. Sure Vodafone would know that I activated $2 sim, but who checks that it is activated exactly with the sim that came with the phone?
They say: Activate the SIM card included and use it to make at least one phone call. But apart from knowing that all the phones come with $40 card, how do they check that it is that sim and not some other new sim?

        • @bargainparker: They will know if the IMEI has been used on their network so that covers the phone. They will know that their starter kit has been used so that covers the SIM. I doubt that they will know that the Starter Kit sim was used in this phone but I would say that you will need to activate the SIM before 31 Jan to get the cash back. This is probably more important that using the phone actually.

        • @bargainparker:
Pretty sure the included sim is linked to the phone's imei.

        • @benbegg:

IMEI, I understand that, although it is not related to what I asked.

Yes, they will know that their starter kit has been used, but jackofspade gave better answer even though it still doesn't answer whether the sim and the phone is linked or I could just activate it with any other new not activated sim. Since I am not on Voda that sim would be just wasted when it could be used to nullify the cost of unlocking the phone. Sell the sim for @20 and pay unlocking fee.

I have looked through Whirlpool forum, but apart from one person asking about it, there was no mention whether it is achievable or not.

        • What if you use it with a new prepay service, but you port in?

  • locked makes it a deal breaker for me

  • just bought one from coles today. Activated the sim & make a phone immediately then tried to claim the gift card, but got a message below:

    ERROR
Something didn't go as planned. It can take up to 5 working days before you can claim your gift card, after your Vodafone prepaid service is activated and used in the correct handset.
Please try back again in few days. If you already tried and not working, please give us a call on 1555.

so need to wait for 5 working days to see how it goes.

    • yeah, just wait for few days and submit again, I have to wait for 5 days.
My colleague only waited for 3 days

  • I have the Y550 would this be a good upgrade besides the 4g? Also can I get confirmation on no led notifications? That is a really handy feature of my Y550.

    • +1

It would appear to be a decent upgrade, faster, higher res + larger screen, Android 5.1, double the inbuilt memory, better cameras and flash. I'm a little turned off by the onscreen buttons though but they seem to hide away when required to gain back the screen area (at least for some games and videos etc).

      • Chrome does not seem to hide it which is annoying

        • Should mention that I dont own one yet, just going by video reviews Ive seen. I think I did see someone fullscreening the browser though (perhaps it was in landscape mode only (could be wrong).

    • +3

I can confirm that there is no led notifications. However for 99-50-40 = $9 cost android phone, don't be greedy

      • How do I get the extra 40 off?

        • don't think it is possible as selling the sim means you will not be able to claim the $50 card

        • You don't get 40 off, but you get $40 pre-paid credit, I have been using prepaid service, so it is equivalent $40 value for me.

  • Is it an upgrade from a Nexus 4?

    • +3

As the Y6 Elite 4G seems to be fairly similar to (rebadged??) the Huawei Y5 II 4G, this comparison may help.

      http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8036&idPhone2=…

I believe that the GPU in the Huawei is faster than the Nexus. Nexus has 2GB RAM though vs 1GB for Huawei.

Nexus has no SD Card slot so loses on that one plus I don't think it's 4G?

Nexus does have 1080p video recording though compared to 720p on Huawei, Nexus also has gyro and wireless charging.

A few other benefits/downers but really depends on what you consider an upgrade. The SD slot and 4G would probably be the biggest plus but depends if the other differences outweigh that benefit for you.

    • Considering it to be a fresh phone, it'll defs run much faster than an old nexus 4.

  • Actual deal is on page 29 of Coles catalog (right hand side, lower half) - if anyone else had trouble seeing it.

The $40 pay-as-you-go starter kit (I guess that's "prepaid"?) has a 365 day expiry - seems extraordinarily good, most are monthly. Data is 2 cent per MB (double the usual 1c/mb for data only), and charged in 512kb blocks (most are 1kb blocks now). So it's like $20 of data.

    • +1

You can choose $15 2GB pack add-on for one month if you use a lot of data.

    • +2

Interestingly it says that the first 4MB of a data session are zero rated. I assume this means that small pings wont quickly deplete your credit? "2c per MB in 512KB increments, with the first 4MB of usage in each data session zero rated."

      • Wasn't sure what that meant, but if you're right, it would be great, as small text sites are well below 4MB. e.g. reddit with .compact suffix and low comment number etc settings is something like 10-30kb per page.

  • The $50 EFTPOS T&C includes the right to spam you: http://www.vodafone.com.au/about/legal/marketing

Anyone had success in opting-out? Given the 9 screens of people not getting the cards, might be even harder…

  • Thanks, Bought one of these phones from coles. For $99 its a very good phone , of course once i get the gift card redeemed and use all the credit it becomes even better , $9 phone . Even without all that its a very solid phone.

  • +9

Picked one up this morning in Coffs Harbour. First impressions are pretty damn good for the price provided I can successfully get the $50 eftpos card.

Screen is very nice, I'm used to the PPI of an iPhone 5 and the clarity is only slightly lower than my iPhone (with a much bigger screen and higher res to boot). Viewing angles and colours are great. There is about a 1.5mm black border around the screen before the white bezel. The onscreen buttons seem reasonably well behaved for the most part and hide away when not required (although they stay on screen when using Chrome so you lose a little screen space there).

I like the way you can set the colour temperature for the screen in display settings, not sure if that is just a usual Android 5.1 thing or not but the option wasn't on my Y550 if I remember correctly.

The double tap to wake is quite a good feature, although it takes around 1 second to wake after the second tap, not instant.

Doesn't come with headphones (will need them if you wish to use inbuilt radio), but does include a screen protector which you apply yourself, which is a handy addition.

Seems quite smooth to use, although all I have to compare it to in terms of semi recent decent Android phones in my wife's Galaxy S5.

Just had a browse around gizmodo.com.au and abc.net.au/news sites and it's nice and smooth in Chrome.

Installed a few games, including "pinout" for a quick test, runs well on mid settings. Also tried a little 3D puzzle game called Mekorama which runs brilliantly although it's a tiny game. Lastly tested an old favourite, Reckless Racing 3 which played well.

    Netflix plays very nicely.

I'm not sure if there really are two speakers in this thing but if so then it's likely they are both in the same speaker grill as covering one hole results in a reduction in output, whereas covering the other hole makes no difference. Highly likely the second grill is the microphone.

Doesn't come with a built in compass app although I did download one to test the compass sensor and it works. Has a dual LED flash.

Feels quite well made, the silver edge appears to sound like metal when tapped, although might be just some high density plastic (It's not attracted to a magnet).

  • Just purchased. They only had white and it's not dual SIM as I thought it would be dual sim. Did anyone get a choice of colour?

    • +1

Mine is also white, it does mention the colour on the outside of the outer box sleeve so I guess there may have been other colours available. They had to search through an unorganised drawer full to find mine though so just happy to get one. I generally would prefer a black bezel though as its less distracting, and better contrast with the screen I think.

      • I asked for gold but he said there was only white even though there were a good 10 phones there and he didn't search through them. Is yours dual SIM?

        • Maybe that's the only colour Vodafone are doing then. No not dual sim. Are there many prepaid locked phones that actually are?

        • saw some youtube reviews of y6 elite, one with black, one with gold. maybe this special is stock clearance of white?

        • +1

@yow: There appears to be a black one on some new zealand reviews but I think it may also have a 13mp camera so is perhaps a slightly different model for that market.

  • +1

For a second I thought I had made a massive goof… I activated the simcard as a mobile broadband sim for the longer expiry on the data. But then the instant I put it through I remembered the eftpos card is dependent on making a call. Thankfully I called the vodafone customer service number (1555) and told them my dilemma, he put me on hold and said he'll ask the marketing team. Came back two minutes later and said it's fine, calling the customer service number on the phone with the sim card counts as a valid call and you'll still be able to claim the card. Phewwww!

tl;dr Calling the Vodafone Call Centre still counts as a valid call for the eftpos card

    • What block size is data charged at when setting up as mobile broadband sim, is it still 512kb blocks?

      • +1

Not sure, the terms and conditions only say "kb increments"

        Mobile Broadband Prepaid Recharges
Credit expires as per table above unless you recharge in that time. Maximum allowable data accumulation is 50GB, once you reach this limit you can no longer recharge. For details credit on expiry period for accumulated Recharge Data, see vodafone.com.au/terms. Usage is calculated in per KB increments. Included data only for use in Australia on Vodafone’s network. Pricing subject to change.

Cheers OP, didn't really look into it the past few deals, but sort of needed a new cheap phone and after reading this post and some of the WP thread I pulled the (essentially) $9 trigger, I guess if all goes well with the eftpos gift card etc.
FWIW, I just bought mine from Coles Kings Langley, there were about 6-7 in stock when I bought mine, all white color.

  • This phone has issue with Speaker. its damn low and would not be able to listen to other party even on loud speaker.

  • I'm thinking about getting this for my 7 year old as an mp3/streaming music player. Does anyone have any comments about whether this is a good option or can suggest a better one for a similar price(i like the additional utility of a phone vs a dedicated music player)? Thanks

    • It would be a good mp3/streaming music player but it only comes with 8gb internal memory, so you will most likely need to buy a micro sd card for extra storage.
It also doesn't come with earphones. Those 2 extra items are quite cheap to buy nowadays. Otherwise it is a very good phone for that price range.

      • Thanks for the info. Hopefully they'll be in stock.

    • +2

Memory is expandable to 128GB SD Card. Will make a fantastic media player as the screen is 5 inch and great colour/resolution and viewing angles for a phone of this price.

The only downside to a screen that size is that it makes the phone quite large for a 7 year old to hold. It is thin though, similar size to a galaxy S5 and slightly larger than an iPhone 6 I think.

If you wanted something smaller for kids hands then maybe something like a Boost Zume 5 which come on special for as low as $29 sometimes at Coles. However they are far inferior in most aspects to the Y6. Should suffice as Mp3 player though and Im guessing they probably come with a set of crappy headphones as well, Y6 doesnt.

If you get the Y6 though… and DO… stick the prepaid card on the 365 day expiry plan and it should do you for a year of very occasional use at 20c a minute, 20c a SMS and 2c per mb data, ideal emergency account for kids whereby you just use it to call them or they call you very infrequently. Perhaps disable the data from the phone though or they will use up the credit very quickly with a few Youtube vids of someone opening up new toys.

I just ordered this cheap case and tempered glass for $3.69 for mine. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/182236662127 (it says Y5 II but it apparantly should fit the Y6 Elite fine)

      • +2

Yeah, if being used as a media player primarily, I'd go as far as saying adding an SD card is a must do (as the stock storage is quite low, and would only quickly get depleted after a handful of videos/music+pics) so start looking for a decent one now too!
Yeah I was quite pleasantly surprised with the size of the screen (I don't pay attention to the numbers) but my main phone is a 6plus, so I was content with the Huawei screen size, and when comparing it to my younger sisters iPhone 4… Ha! ;)
As far as sound quality, when researching, I read that even the Huawei P9 (much superior Huawei phone) sound quality was average compared to others, but I'm sure unless your 7 year old is a musical prodigy or something, this would be that big of an issue :P it's not tooooo bad..
And yeah I got myself a case and tempered glass for my Y6 elite also, and yeah I've also read the Y5 II / Y5 2 cases fit the Y6 elite, but be careful not to get cases for the Y5 (no II) and Y6 (no elite) as I've heard they are different. I ended up getting this slightly "tough" case, as I'm pretty clumsy, and it'll match my iPhone 6plus otterbox :P https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/122170570822

      • Hi Gravy,

Have you, by any chance, received your case yet? Does it fit OK?
I am also thinking of getting an el-cheapo case for it :-) Thanks in advance.

        • +1

Yep, received Monday. Fits fine, everything in the right spots. This particular one does not overlap the screen at all though so the screen itself sits fairly much exactly level with the edges of the case. Usually I like my cases to have a bit of overhang for added screen protection, which this case doesnt really have.

Case is quite thin, so not bulky at all but this means less drop protection.

There is a slight molding issue at the back of mine where the silicone hasnt quite run correctly, but its only really visible in reflected light and may be a one off issue.

Buttons are covered by the case material but still easy to press.

Edit: I have noticed that the cutout for the camera lens is more rounded to match the lens of the Y5II , whereas our Y6 Elite lenses have a slightly squarer look, in practice is makes no difference though and the lens and LED fits fine through through hole, nothing obscured and you would have to look carefully to even notice.

        • @Gravy: Thanks for the detailed description.

    • +1

From a fussy Audiophile perspective, weak speaker aside, the sound quality from headphone out seems a little aneamic and thin and for some reason just doesn't seem to be up to the standard of other China droids I've had (where SQ can be quite accurate/full bodied/musical even at the mid-price level). Otherwise seems a great phone. For SQ would rather stream off my xiaomi note 3 though (using a built-in preset EQ to match with my ears/phones admittedly)

  • +3

I activated the sim last Thursday & successfully submitted the claim today for $50 Eftpos card. so wait for 14 days to receive it.

  • Do I need to unlock to use Kogan SIM? Kogan uses Voda network.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure that you don't have to. I use it with a TPG sim (also with voda) and it works fine.

  • Are these still available? Also if can I use other providers that use Voda?

    • Yes still available until tonight. Yes other providers using voda should work.

  • Although vodafone's normal "PAYG" prepaid starter kit has 365 day expiry, the $40 starter kit in this offer seems to be for "combo" and has only 28 days. From $50 gift card, T&C link at bottom of https://vha.secure.force.com/prepaygiftcard

      • After activating how long did you wait before you applied for the gift card?
