Been looking for an small office desk and saw that Aldi is selling a really nice looking with for only $79.99 from the 25th of January. It's a danish style design and similar ones usually cost quite a lot more at IKEA and similar stores, so thought some other people might be interested as well.

From the website:

Worth noting that matching 3-draw filing cabinet $49.99 and bookcase with draw $99.99 will also be available.

Do you think the filing cabinet can fit underneath the desk? The picture seems to suggest it might be just a little too tall

I think you're right. It wouldn't leave much room for your legs either

is the bookshelf stable enough ? Do I have to tie/hook on the wall?

I'm buying just because it has meta runners. That sounds cool.

    • +1

because when it's actually "Metal" it sounds boring !

      meta world peace.

I'm thinking they will be like Blade runners. Except meta.

  • Friends,

I have never seen aldi furniture nor been to one of their stores. How does their furniture compare in quality to say ikea or other budget furniture shops? The pine legs have me a bit dubious because it's a rather soft wood isn't it?

I purchased a chest of drawers in an earlier sale this year. It is obviously particle board/chipboard, so it is wood…however tiny pieces of wood mixed with glue and then pressed, and its only 12mm thick (at best). Overall its not too bad IMO. Has a fair amount of horizontal sway when empty but is ok when full. As far as flatpack furniture goes its not IKEA grade, but its not Crazy Clarks grade - its somewhere in the middle - you cant just punch a hole in it, Chuck Norris can, but you cant.

I purchased the same set of draws and in my case the particle board in the draws feel apart within 3 months. I would not buy this sort of thing from them again, just a little too cheap imo.

        • Thanks for reply. Useful to know.

I prefer to buy ex gov furniture. Solid stuff and not conforming to this use and throw culture.

    • Where can one find ex gov furniture though ?

      • +1

I only know for the city I live in.

        Canberra

Auction places sell ex gov furniture as well. try ex office or ex government furniture + [Your city name] in google.

If only you knew what govt staff do with the furniture.

        I work for them.

      • Let's not dance all over that topic! … Yeah!!!

  • kmart has something similar for half the price http://www.kmart.com.au/product/hallway-table---natural/1178…

    • Similar style but the Kmart one is a hallway table. Only 30cm deep.

    • It is smaller…couldn't be used as a desk.

Also from experience, Kmart is about the worst possible for furniture.

    • This looks better for dimensions and place for cabinet as well may be!
      http://www.kmart.com.au/product/industrial-trestle-desk/8244…

as Aldi's only 48 deep - which might be less to some!

    • kmart's furniture items are very roughly made and of poor quality. i think they airbrush those online and catalogue photos.

      • Can't agree more, their furniture feels cheap, the quality not even close to Fantastic furniture.

  • Nice - a cheaper version of the Ikea one http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/10299071/
