Looking for a Goretex Waterproof Jacket

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap Goretex waterproof jacket, whether it be instore or online? So far the cheapest I have found is 150 at the Mountain Designs outlet store.

Optionally I'm heading to Japan in a few weeks so I wouldn't mind picking up one there either, if anyone knew where and how much.

Thanks in advance for any help.

That seems pretty cheap…have you checked the reviews of the one you are talking about?

I don't think you can say Gortex and cheap in the same sentence…but any of those adventure type stores are your best bet I'm guessing…and they might be having their end of year sales so look around.

EDIT: Also Goretex is pretty old tech, not necessarily the best these days…

    • Hmm I'll have to go back to the store to check. They had loads of them though.

Do you have any recommendations for goretex alternatives? I'm after a good waterproof jacket - the last one I had was not goretex and rained through after an hour whereas a friend's goretex jacket held strong.

      • Yeah, it really depends on what you will be using it for.

I would just research as much as possible (reading reviews) and also trying them on to make sure they fit you (not too tight or not too loose), not too thick or not too thin, have enough pockets (in the right places if you are going to use a backpack).

Personally I don't own any of the expensive rain jackets (even though I would love to). I always browse them when they have sales, but cannot (at this point) justify spending that much on one.

I own a Rainbird Jacket that was only $20 or $50??? Will survive light/med rain, but nothing really heavy or for long periods…good enough for what I use it for (which is mainly just walking to work about 4 kms).

Pretty sure in a torrential downpour, just a jacket won't help that much anyway. I've walked home in my Rainbird jacket and I got wet through the neck hole, the water came off the jacket and soaked my shorts, then my shoes via my legs and through my socks. It also killed my Nexus 5 (I'm an idiot and left it in the pocket thinking it would be okay).

They only benefit I think an expensive jacket would have had in that situation would be my Nexus 5 probably wouldn't have died and I wouldn't have gotten as wet through the neck hole. I would still have wet shorts and wet feet.

Hopefully you can find a deal like George did!

      Now that is cruel.

    • You beat me to it! +1 for you (I'd do a lot more if we were allowed to vote more than once).

Well I bought an unofficial North Face one for $40 in Vietnam. I think it's genuine but was smuggled out of the factory. The factory was in the same town where I bought it.

    • bahaha, or "fell off a truck?"

    • That's the way to do it!

      • Well good for him, but in theory increases the price for the rest of us if it is happening a lot. :/

Party has been pooped (by moi).

  • I used to get GoreTex Ski Jackets from the US from places like Sierra Trading Post. They would have big sales with 40% off coupons when the northern seasons start to turn (right about when we need a jacket here in Oz). Unfortunately they now charge an arm and a leg for postage and it is the middle of their winter as well.

I have been in some of the worst weather imaginable (-20 degree blizzard with driving sleet and 2m of snow on the ground) and Goretex with sealed seams has been great. I was wearing layers of clothes underneath the goretex but I stayed nice and dry! I normally ski in GoreTex now, there might be something better out there but GoreTex is a safe bet.

  • Maybe you can win one from Kathmandu if you live near Chatswood?
