Vodafone Mobile Broadband - $39 for Free USB Modem and 6GB Data

This is cheaper than the Optus Coles deal (modem + 5GB data for $44.50) or the Vodafone Coles deal (modem + 2 or 3GB data for $79), WIth this one, you get a modem and 6GB data for $39… basically free modem. As far as I know (unless anyone can see anything to the contrary), it's a month by month internet deal, so just cancel it before the first month ends. The modem is locked to Vodafone, and I am not sure what their procedures for unlocking are… but it's cheap for the data, and you get a spare modem to use in emergency. Not 100% sure, but I presume you can switch to prepaid Vodafone by buying a prepaid BYO modem pack and then go on the 365day 12GB deal for $135 (it's $150 but you get 10% off when buying it at Woolies - and you get QFF points too).

This deal appears to be targeted at Fitness First members but I don't see anywhere on the deal page where it says you have to be a member to qualify.

This is my first post, so hope I didn't miss anything.

  • Can anyone confirm modem model number?
and if it can be unlocked to use on the Optus network?

  • Pretty specific question but - would Vodafone be faster then the Unwired network? I am in South Yarra. Thanks in advance

    • i can almost gurantee you that vodafone is quicker than unwired unless u live under the unwired tower. Unwired has one of the worst networks with the biggest lag.

I clicked through to find that the online order hotline number is '000'

I wonder if emergency services will receive some frantic calls for USB modems :)

Just noticed that! All night tonight at Emergency HQ:

      000: Police, fire, ambulance?
OzB: Umm, I was just wondering about your $39 6GB mobile internet deal - can we unlock the modem and cancel after the first month.

      Phone click beep beep beep…

    • so we have emergencies to get on the internet nowdays…(!)

  • On a more serious note, I have a 3 prepaid mobile broadband simcard I occasionally use - would it work on this hardware without unlocking, given the VHA merger?

    • Whilst they are now the same company, network locks havent changed.

    • You can unlock with a code from eBay for $2-$4.

  • The MB for this can't be $84, it's most probably 10% i.e. the deal works out to be $35.1.

Interesting condition when you checkout, though: 3. Your modem must be unlocked and not reported lost or stolen. Do I go to jail if I lose mine? :S

And yea it looks like you can cancel after just a month :) Must connect for minimum one month. Recurring monthly access fee charged until the end of the month in which you discontinue the service.

  • "Must connect for minimum one month."
    Voda has beaten the Coles/Virgin offer…!! :-)
Nothing specific on which modem though..?

  • Edit: sorry clicked the wrong link :)

Not bargain as if you sign up for the offer, you are actually paying for the USB stick over time, look at the VF site to see that if you were to go on the VF month to month plan for $39 (same one as in this offer) - you would get 8gb and not 6gb.

    • FYI(USB Stick Locked To VF)

      • Metro - you maybe right, but given sometimes discussions flush out these things it maybe a little premature to neg this deal. And what does the neg vote gain? Maybe its nota bargain for you, but for some it may well be.

    • Time to learn to read. You can cancel after first month.

    • Hang on - the regular Month to month deal for 8GB costs $39 + $79 upfront for the modem…

This deal is just $39 for 6GB + 0 for the modem…and under the T&C you can cancel after 1st month.

      Seems alright to me…

      • yep - go on it for a month, get the free modem, use your 6gb, cancel it, then join the 8GB BYO month to month plan

  • Don't get it as Vodafone are having issues nationwide… We ended up going Virgin instead from coles for $44.50.

Their network problem will be even worse now that these are on sale… Buyer beware.

Coles deal has finished, get your facts right.

      • -1

I know that it's finished. Never said that it did. Get YOUR facts right.

  • 2c/MB excess, ie $20/GB. Still a bit of a rip-off, but a lot better than most of the others! Good to see.

However, since the modem is locked to Voda, it is really stretching the definition of "free", but nothing new there.
The real cost of free is $75 within 6 months.
edit: metro beat me on that, but can't you switch plans after the first month?

  • aren't these things real easy to unlock though?

    • They are? Do tell!
Voda do not even say what model it is, so a bit hard to google.

  • i'm assuming it's a k3765

must be a PR? DAMN! just an international student.
can i get this offer in store?

  • So what's the deal? Can you just cancel after the 1st month or what?

  • i just confirmed it with a rep.

    Huawei e122

also I did it post paid???

they will send a modem and include the $39 bill

use the 1st month then cancel or change to prepaid whatever?

    • -1

You apparently talked to a rep yet your still asking us endless questions?

      • i'm not asking you anything

all i'm saying is this goes against a lot of what the web order implies

they did not need my credit card which is a bit odd

  • weird - it says in T&C's :

2: Offer available until 31 July 2010 to existing Fitness First members who sign up to the 6GB $39 Month to Month Mobile Broadband contract plan online via store.vodafone.com.au/strength or over the phone on 1300 365 919

I take it it is still available and buyable …
plus wonder how they check FF membership

  • i'm a FF member and my card only has some stuff written on the back in niko which is worn off now. Otherwise nothing to identify me on the card..

  • well im not an FF member and i signed up yesterday over the phone. woohoo

  • Got it delivered today - the model is Huawei K3765
