my iphone can do the same for $0.
    how is this a deal?

In NSW P platers aren't allowed to use the GPS in their phone

      http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/all-pplaters-banned-from-using-pho…

    • Good for you. If it doesn't suit you then that's fine. There are plenty of other things I'm not interested in

      • tuzii has a good point. You could pick up a second hand phone for cheaper than this and it would have better navigation (Google maps) that is always kept up to date (for free), a better screen and it could do a million other things if you want it to.

Can you let me know where I can pick up an iPhone for $0? Definitely sounds like a bargain that would be worth posting here on OzB.

  • The Go 6200 is normally $449 so a $50 saving and selling for the retail price of the Go 5200 which is $399.

    5200/6200 Include

    • Larger 6" screen (6200)
    • Easy to remove Active magnetic mount
    • Wi-Fi
    • 16b internal memory
    • Hands-free calling
    • Smartphone messages
    • Lifetime World Maps
    • Lifetime TomTom Traffic and Speed Camera alerts.

Lifetime TomTom Traffic is via built-in SIM so no roaming charges and pairing with mobile phone is needed to update the data like other TomTom models.

TomTom Go on mobile devices uses same application as stand alone GPS but requires an ongoing 1 or 3 year subscription to use unlimited Kilometres of travel.

  • I really don't understand the appeal for GPS units now.

Google Maps on my phone works just fine?

    • +1

Everyone has different tastes. When I use Google Maps on my phone, the battery gets stinking hot and even when plugged in and charging, it just about drains more than charge. With a stand alone GPS, my phone is free for other things, such as kids using it to play games etc. Also Google Maps doesn't have traffic alerts and other features that only GPS units have. Each to their own.

Not all car chargers can keep up with the drain. Phones get very hot sitting in the mount (I use a air vent mount and my AC blows cool air on it so it's mitigated somewhat). Phones don't have good location in areas with poor mobile service availability. It is illegal for NSW provisional drivers to touch their phones full stop.

That said, this seems a bit steep for a standalone unit, as my Garmin 2597LMT does a bang up job (cost me $75 used, but it was $150 new at the time).

$400 GPS is too expensive to afford.

I picked up my Garmin DriveSmart 50LMT from the goodguys last week, it has all the same functionalities but less than the half of the price.

I have no idea why Tomtom is so dear.

  • What you need is a stand alone gps unit that has google maps.

You can use any android smart phone or tablet and download Google Maps in offline mode using your home internet. Stores all the mop data locally on the device. So you don't have to worry about the app using up all your mobile data or its a wifi only device.

      • I know, was more thinking the phone gets very hot, but a stand alone gps says cool so would be the best of both worlds the google maps.

  • Ya man, gotta chip in on this one. Just about everyone has access to free gps in their pockets now. Google really killed that market for Garm, Tom and Nav. But, that's evolution, or revolution? Whatever…
