$400 Android Phone - Recommendations

Hey guys,

I need to replace my nexus 5 which I've had now for 3 years. I think nexus 5 is great but the main problem is battery life is too short now so I need to replace it.

Ideally I wouldn't mind something similar spec'd to nexus 5.
Main thing i'm looking for is good battery life, good reception/radio, and good gps function
Camera is not a big deal for me.

I do have enjoyed having the latest android updates with the nexus 5 but don't want to pay too much to get another nexus/pixel.

Also I use testra billing for apps and want to have make sure that I can continue to use this. (I believe that telstra billing does not work on some roms)

Cheers

I can use Telstra Billing on most of my devices, including but not limited to my rooted LG G2 with a custom ROM, my ancient Mediatek based THL W8 which is a Galaxy S3 rip-off and Redmi Note 2.

I don't think the billing is really specific to any Android version either

As for phones, here is a list of phones with batteries 3000mah and larger, made within 2015-216 with NFC and 2GB of RAM min

Without NFC, again 2GB ram min and with recent release date

    • thanks scrimshaw

some good options there. looking at the moto x seems to be in my pricerange. I wonder if it would get regular OS updates since google owns motorola.

      • Googled the X Play and according to news It's getting Nougat soonish

  • I would have recommended the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3/4/Mix however i'm not sure if telstra billing for apps works with them (in theory it should).

    • Have been looking at xiaomi. they seem to be great value phones. I would be interested to know if people have had success with telstra billing.

Also was a bit worried about the OS which comes with the phone. How does it compare to the vanilla android experience?

I bought a Mi 5 recently, and I have to say MIUI is one of, if not THE BEST third party android skins. It is so clean, snappy, has great functionality and very importantly has a large online community which is very useful for help and support.

I havent tried any billing apps so I cant comment, however I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be supported.

I highly recommend the Mi 5 or any xiaomi phone, here is the link to where I got mine ($288 AUD)

        aliexpress

        • hi ironxylophone

what other phones/skins are you comparing the MIUI to. Reviews on the net are mixed about MIUI interface.

aso are there any issues with purchases from google play. (will it automatically transfer your previous purchases)

          cheers

The Moto g4 plus isn't a bad choice for a phone that just came out last year, it would most likely have Telstra Billing, think of it as a Nexus 5 with microSD storage and dual sim and a fingerprint sensor. Should be around $350 - $450 depending on if you wanted the 16GB with 2GB RAM or 32GB with 3GB RAM

    • yep will add to short list

      Looks good
      Battery life seems reasonable
