Automatic to Manual Drivers Licence

Hi everyone.

I'm currently a full licence Australian/Melbournian driver and have been for the past 5 years.
I've started learning manual and keen to switch to manual licencing.

My question is: do I need to be with an instructor while I'm driving/get a new manual licence?

VicRoads website is a little confusing and I've been told different situations from different people. Help a brother out, please!

The answer to the above in this situation is a resounding Yes; you need to be with a manual license holder. I had to do the same in WA.

    • For long though?

      • I needed to undergo a practical driving test to get the automatic restriction off. No minimum time period before you can take the test.

        • My drivers licence doesnt have any conditions, so I assume it still applies to me?

If it has no conditions, then I would assume you have an unrestricted license. What does it say under class? "C" or "C-A"? C is unrestricted, whereas the other is automatic only.

        • @Midnightartist: No conditions on my licence

In Melbourne you can drive an automatic or manual when you have your full license without having to do any other tests

      • I thought this was the case too. Not sure what Midnightartist was talking about,

        • From Transport WA

          A restriction
You will need to pass a Practical Driving Assessment in a vehicle that is fitted with manual transmission (gears). Refer to Practical Driving Assessment for more information.

I was referring to my situation in WA and I now realize this can be different to other states.

        • @Midnightartist:

The answer to the above in this situation is a resounding Yes

          Not quite as resounding anymore?

        • @Baysew: yes, not quite.

If you're on your full license you can drive an auto or manual in VIC. Automatic restriction goes away after you get off your Ps.

Source: Vicroads website - scroll to automatic transmission
And I'm on my P's currently with an auto license and dying for the day I can legally drive my s15 :P

    • You know you can go and do the practical test again with a manual car to have the condition removed.

      • Yeah, just bought the car and only have a few months so not much point now :)

As shapers, full licence is a manual licence.

Concerning though is that you can get a heavy rigid auto truck licence - by being allowed to drive a manual car, this also lets you drive a manual truck. Someone that has no experience driving a gearbox can all of a sudden drive an 8+ tonne manual truck.

    • I thought that is ridiculous too, only seen this in Australia. People passing test on Automatic without undergoing and test can drive manual if they like to… As if they will be able to drive 10 yards without learning properly.

      utterly Nonsense.
