SSD or m2 for Desktop. Reliable stores in Brisbane for purchase

Hi all,

need few suggestions. Friend of mine asked to help to sort his parents pc and when i checked its alright but was very slow. Suggested ssd will make things faster and they are happy but don't know about computers.

  1. I have suggested for Samsung evo 850 or sandisk ultra 2 SSD. Not sure for desktop this is good choice or go with m2 or anything else. Size of HDD is 480 or 500 GB to make sure even if they load with videos still it will be good. Reliability is important for premium price.

Spec from my mind it is a desktop with 3rd Gen i7, 8GB ram and Windows 10.

  1. I buy stuff from amazon but he want to buy locally or with in AU. Please suggest reliable stores in Brisbane with atleast decent service. I'am aware of MSY but are there any alternative stores which are decent in price tag or reliable online PC stores.

  2. I haven't worked on upgrading SSD on desktop recently but any thing need to be taken care of before swapping i.e. jumper to select primary and secondary. I do have AOEMI backup software, so data transfer wont be a problem.

Thanks in advance.

    Umart…?

Dont expect super low prices and fantastic service however - they are competing priorities

    • What makes you say that?

I find Umart (I've used Milton and Chermside) have good customer service. Though I have never used their after sales support, and time I need to buy stuff they readily give advice and help purchase.

Even MSY at Brendale has been pretty helpful to me. Happy to give advice and have a chat.

    Sandisk Ultra II 480GB
    Crucial MX300 525GB
    Samsung Evo 750 500GB

    All fairly cheap…

Any one of those three is going to absolutely fly compared to the standard HDD they have now.

Also if their PC is a 3rd gen i7, it will not have an M.2 slot on the motherboard so forget that. A standard SATA SSD will be a big improvement for them anyway.

  • I usually buy at Computer Alliance - the prices are OK, not the cheapest, but it's a very short driving distance for me and the counter service is OK too. The Samsung EVO 850 is great, but they don't sell the 120GB anymore, just 250+.

How can a computer like that be slow. My computer is 8 years old, and I just recently put an SSD in and it feels brand new again. I only use it for web browsing and basic tasts. Used to be used for gaming but not anymore. Get the Crucial MX300.

  • SATA. There are no jumpers on SATA - each cable goes to one device, it's not like the old 80 pin cables. Even if their mobo did support M2, there wouldn't be any point, just get whatever's easiest - they won't know the difference, and it will seem fast comparatively.

  • Grab a crucial MX300 525GB

  • Thanks all for the information.

Let him decide his budget and see which one. I have purchased Crucial MX300 and happy with performance for 5 year old laptop.

So either will go for Sandisk or crucial. I guess both are having 3 year warranty which is good period.
