Google Maps milking my data dry

Dear fellow bargainers,

I use google maps for generally 6/8 hours per day.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Roughly how much data should get used ?

What are the steps to reduce data usage if possible?

to reduce, download offline maps before hand. but if you go to new places unplanned then its impossible to download the whole NSW for example

  • I think the real time traffic display chew up your data, try to turn this off but you may not able to be on the fastest route.

Apart from that, you can use data to search for the destination then turn data off, the only time it use data is to find the exact location you need to go + live traffic routing.

use an offline navigation apps like "Here WeGo" if you're using Android or IOS and download the necessary maps, you can even download the whole Australia…

Maybe consider another app that stores data offline (I'm aware google maps does this but it's less than having the entire city/state offline) such as https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapswithme…

  • Alternatively you could use offline maps. Reading maps is not very difficult.

  • Thanks for the info.

Will be going to new places virtually everyday, a couple are the same, so I need live updates until I learn to memorize them.

In the last month I've used 4.3gb and 2.3gb of that has been the Android OS.

I also upgraded from Lollipop to Marshmellow recently also.

Has anyone else experienced this from Marshmallow?

Android OS means OS upgrades etc. Map usage would be counted under maps, so at most 2GB last month.

There is an Offline mode for google maps. Here's an article with more detail. http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/mobile-phone/download-goog…

    • ^ this, you can select vicinity you visit in google maps app and download it by wi-fi, even if you will be using data for faster routes I don't think it will consume much data.

  • Sounds like you're in courier or delivery business, or perhaps Uber?. If so you should be on Telstra network, if you already are congratulations, because Whereis map is unmetered on Telstra, it still costs you a tiny bit of data when it calculates your routes initially but the bulk of the map update is free.

Note: this only applies to the full Telstra network not the telstra wholesale such as Aldi or Woolworths etc.

    • Thanks for the tip!

I'll give it a run today and see how it fares.

I used about 120mb of data yesterday.

    • I gave it a try and it's worse than google maps.

      When it says "turn right"
Google maps says "turn right at xxxxx street then turn left in xxx metres".

Another occasion it said veer right instead of "turn right", causing me to miss the turn.

I wanted to pinch it so I could see a macro view of the planned route but wasn't able to..

Basically it gives you less comprehensive information than Google and less relevant details.

It may use less data but it's lack of vital information might be ok if you're already reasonably confident about where you're going but not helpful if you need detailed data.

Fair enough, i used it years ago when i was courier-ing mobile data was outrageously expensive, hardly used google so can't comment between the two. Nowadays i use the car's built-in tomtom sat nav, bought a navman recently for it's lifetime maps but still prefer the outdated tomtom
