I find it funny you spend AUD$1000 on a video card yet CHEAP OUT on an WD black instead of WD blue,
yet you pay 700 bucks for wanky led ram, heck you would get three 24-27" 1440p screens also for
the price of the single 34" aswell , it just seems like you went to a store and choose the most expensive parts

  • I mean, I spent less than $800 for my: Entire System + 2x 24" 1200p monitors (that i set at 1600p and look amazing still) + Cherry Brown keyboard

    System:
    2x Xeon X5560
    Gigabyte GA-7TESH1-RH
32Gb Samsung ECC FBDIMM DDR3 RAM
    EVGA GTX1060 SC (3gb)
Cooler Master V850 Fully Modular PSU
Micron M600 M.2 SSD (256GB) + M.2 to SATA Adapter (I originally bought a M.2 to PCIe adapter but can't figure out why it wont work)
Antec SX1030 (this beauty was given to me for free from a friend)

    2x Acer AL2416W
Kogan Backlit Mechanical Keyboard (Armageddon Stealth Raptor MKA-7)

    • whats the performance like with the xeons, have heard good thing about them for budget builds

      • Most Xeons are just like their Core I counterparts, they just lack some things like an integrated GPU and they cannot be over clocked.

x5560 is old though, from 2010, it is much slower and more power hungry than anything released this year or the year before.

This seems like the most ridiculous troll post. I think you are the kid. You appear to have no knowledge as to what components will actually work together and have selected the most expensive in everything category posting it here for self gratification. However, on the off chance I'm wrong, as others have said.

No need for such extravagant ram at such capacity 16gb of basic corsair ram is future proof enough.
Power supply is overkill , use a PSU calculator.
GPU can be had much cheaper.
No need for the top of the line 6core i7 CPU there little no advantage in having the extra cores in gaming.
    Why dual ssds?

    This build makes no sense.

    • When I read this build originally I thought it had to be the biggest piss take going around, what kind of first-time builder lashes out $6K on components but still can't even choose a motherboard that is compatible with the chosen CPU

    • Or… I am seeking opinions on what I quickly picked from the Ebay 20% sale. And for the most part everyone has been really helpful…pointing out a few errors in my selections etc…

I'm sorry you jump to such a neg first impression, and glad you did include some helpful comments to end with.

Yes, I'm not as tech savvy as I perhaps should be, and from my perspective some of the gear is a bit confusing as to what matches what…. but that's why I've posted here to get the advise from some really kind people.

As for 'self-gratification' as you put it….LOL I have better ways to achieve that ;)

Anyway, if you actually read my replies about half way down page 1, I did admit to my over-eagerness and have advised of several amendments to my original post. I ask would a 'kid' out for 'self gratification' bother heeding any of the advice/opinions given herein ? I think not.

      Cheers

  • If you're going to spend so much on a computer, you really should buy a second hard drive.

One hard drive for data. The other hard drive as the backup of the data. Either setup as Raid 1 or use a program like Synctoy to do a weekly backup.

  • Oh dear…It is inevitable that some people here unfortunately have taken offence to my original post in that they suggest certain scenarios pertaining to my motives for posting such a 'ill-conceived' list of parts.

Luckily though they are in the minority.

For the rest of whom have posted good advice and pointed out some bad choices for my draft parts list..I say thank you :) much appreciated.

I have settled on building one based around a similar config as I did for my son using the i6700k, but with a couple of upgrades :

    Asus Maximus VIII Hero Motherboard
    Intel i6700k CPU
    Cryorig H7 CPU Cooler
    1080 Windforce GPU
    Corsair HX 750i PSU
    Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2 x 16gb Ram modules
    2x Samsung 960 Pro 1TB
    DVD Optical Drive LG
    Wifi adapter Asus PCE-AC68
    Corsair Crystal Series 460X Case

The main diffs being the motherboard, SSDs and a 1080 Windforce GPU.

Unsure if air cooling will be ok…it seems fine for my sons 1070 setup though…so maybe ok.

I think that will be sufficient for me :) I'm not going to be a pro-gamer.

So I take it this config would be a smarter choice ?

Only thing I am still unsure of is a really nice monitor.

    Cheers

There are still a few problems with the build you are going for, I recommend you put you part list into http://au.pcpartpicker.com to get a full run down.
But the SSD you listed are M.2 2280 SSD's and the motherboard only supports one M.2, so you'll need to change to one M.2 and the other SATA or just a traditional HDD which you could grab a 4TB and still be saving half of the price of one 960 PRO

Let him learn the hard way….

      • Ok..thanks..i see that now. Good advice..cheers…

    • I'd go an 850 watt psu in case you decide to get a second 1080.

    • Are those 2 SSDs to be configured for Raid?
If yes, do you know how to configure them and the pros and cons of the Raid config that you'll choose?

Yes, Certain Raid configurations will give you faster disk speed, but do you really need it and really feels the difference? That might be arguable..

    • Also agreed with other guys saying the $700+ mobo is overkill
You could probably buy something good for half the price and use the rest for a nice family dinner

  • I was just going to point that out. The Hero motherboard has only one M.2 slot available so you'll need to cut that down to 1x Samsung 960 Pro 1TB.

    • Yep..done. i switched my mobo down to a asus z170 pro.

      Cheers

  • Also not sure why you changed your mind on liquid cooling. It is a much better cooling solution, provides better case ventilation and it also looks much neater inside the case.

If you're willing to spend this much why don't you just buy a prebuilt and save yourself the hassle

    • Not sure about this guy, but certain people really enjoy the hassle of building their own pc

      • well he obviously hasn't done it before (hence asking the noobiest of questions here) so I can't imagine that he enjoys it, but hey each to their own

        • Actually i have done it before…and my son is very happy with it !!

And i got advice from here first back then also.

Any questions I've asked have been regarding options i did not venture to with my sons build.

And yes..i actually enjoyed building it…and will enjoy this one too.

I'm sure your post means well but seriously. .. don't assume.

          Cheers

    • I enjoy the challenge :)

The 1080 is a great card, however. Think back to last gen. The 980 was supposedly very powerful, high price too, same thing with the 980ti and Titan X. Now? They get outdone by mid range cards in the pascal lineup (1060 and 1070-at less than half the price-). IMO, get a 1070, great middle ground and it is the best value for money. The 1080 costs sometimes double the 1070, (i got mine for $560,1070 EVGA SC model) and the 1080s generally provide around 25-50% more performance, not worth it for the price unless you are doing 4k gaming or 144hz 1080p gaming.

    Power supply is overkill
    $770 Mobo is pointless
i7 6850k pointless unless doing rendering/video editing etc. 6700k is fine, far better value

    • I stuck with the 1080…only because i want to get the best picture quality i can for my $$.

Yer it will probably drop price in few months and maybe something better will be here..but for now its ok.

I'm really like excellent picture quality…same goes for my home theatre.

      Cheers

I love that he thinks buying in the 20% off ebay sale he's saving 20%. He must not know the retailers jack their prices up 20% prior to the sale. A bargain $6k system…. lulz.

    • I did some comparisons before i bought the items…some i found cheaper normal price elsewhere so i removed those items from my ebay cart :)

  • yeah cut down on some things and put it to a future machine, with computers its better to just upgrade often than trying to futureproof

    • More good advice..i have cut down on mobo.

      thanks..cheers.

  • With a budget of $6000, why don't you just build the Monstrous tier machine on Logical Increments and save yourself the trouble of selecting compatible components?

And you will be pleased to know that the lowly sum of $6000 is only the starting price for this tier, and you can easily spend more by selecting the more expensive options.

To save you from disaster (spending $2k more than you have to) I just threw together a Complete PC without the monitor on PCCG for you. it's better than the one you spec'd out with a newer CPU and Motherboard chipset. The CPU has higher clocks so gaming will be "better" :)

Add a monitor and you're done.

    Intel Core i7 7700K $509
    Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2133C13R 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 $165
    Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming 8GB $959
ASUS ROG Strix Z270E Gaming Motherboard $349
    Intel 600P Series 1TB M.2 SSD $469
    Western Digital WD Black $305
Corsair Hydro Series H100i 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler $159
Corsair Carbide Clear 400C Compact Mid-Tower Case White $149
Corsair AX860 Platinum Power Supply $299

    Total:
    $3363

    • Thank you…

Your time and effort are much appreciated :)

What do you recommend for monitor?

      Cheers
