1TB NetGear NAS: $209 (NetGear Stora MS2110)

40

Not a bad price for a 1TB NAS

Review:
http://www.cnet.com.au/netgear-stora-ms2110-339298673.htm

Apparently it is hack-able, and you get root access to the linux OS
Thereby possible to install torrent client, open source admin client etc..
have to do more reading on that ….

Tempted myself, but don't have the money to shell out, maybe be a bargain for some-one else

    Edit:

checked Delivery is $14 to Sydney

    • Shouldn't it be Free Delivery ?

      http://www.citysoftware.com.au/Delivery.aspx
Q: When do I receive free courier delivery?
All orders over $200 and less than 5kg are delivered anywhere in Australia by courier with no freight charge. Sometimes it's worth picking up another special to save the delivery cost!

  • I have this device at home with additional 1TB hdd for mirroring. It works, but not with some annoying bugs.

    Some problems I've encountered:
    1. Access to shared (Family) folder requires additional software and login every time you re-connect.
    2. Some bugs with DLNA indexing. Not all media files in shared media folder shows up on my PS3.
    3. If you put your iTunes library on this drive, sometimes iTunes fails to find the file.

Firmware upgrades have been promised but have been delayed and delayed and delayed.

    • have you hacked it (as in root access - linux mods) ?
there are reports all over the net, with these units having problems, so you reckon it's not worth $199 ?

  • Officeworks has it for the same price

Umart has it at $189 as a standard price (not on special). They have stores in QLD and VIC. http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=7

I unlocked root access on mine but it's definitely not a device for those quick to anger. Just getting it setup through my network was a trial. But now it's running a torrent client quite happily 24x7.

The unit had JBOD mode but was pulled back to a previous firmware version when bugs arose. I believe JBOD will be back next time they can update the firmware and maintain stability.

You will need to hack it if you want to manipulate files and folders with SAMBA as you'll need to modify file permissions.

Bought one of these for a friend. Unless if you are able to and confident to hack it, I would not recommend this unit. Out of the box it uses a "user-friendly" (ahum) "library system", not a straight "drive". Setting up mapped drives is a pain - if the "agent" software on the computer does not start up in time, then Windows won't map your drive because it doesn't have the authentication yet. Out of the box it is not really possible to disconnect it from the internet, because you can no longer configure it. You would have to block incoming AND outgoing traffic to block it trying to connect, but you can then no longer get to the configuration page.

    • So, overall crappy or good if hacked?

  • Can you upgrade the hard disk(s) in the unit?

    • The front cover pops off and two levels at the back release the drive bays so you can run 2 2TB drives if you wish. It claims to be hot swappable but everything I've read says you should turn the unit off before ejecting or inserting a drive.

      • Thanks Plow.
Just read all the reviews, think I will pass. As much as I'd like another 4tb of space, don't think I want the hassle that will go with this device…
