10kg Bags of Supercoat Dry Dog Food $16 @ Coles

160

Spotted at Coles in Fletcher NSW. Not sure if this is a store specific deal. I know it's not the greatest dog food, but it's not bad for mixing in with more premium kibble to save money.

This was on special at Coles Coburg North as well this morning so I assume all Coles.

I wouldn't feed it to my dog, but I suppose it's probably better than some of the other foods out there

      From the link:

I often ask people in the park what they feed their dogs, especially if they look really healthy or really unhealthy. If I had a dollar for every time the owner of a stocky dog with a dull coat has replied “Supercoat”…

If you're looking to mix good kibble with something wholesome, make your pet some rice.

Let's be real here though, if people really cared we wouldn't be feeding our pets processed food at all. It's all about whats cheap, what they'll eat and what doesn't make them sick. To that effect, its a contest between this, pedigree and optimum, all single starers on that website you quoted.

      • At least it has meat as the main ingredient (which Pedigree doesn't). I don't just feed my dogs kibble on it's own, so if this months budget is tight, you could do a lot worse than Supercoat. That website is something I've referred to before, but the reviews are a little harsh.

        • Unfortunately said meat alternates, which can often cause a few problems for dogs with more sensitive stomachs. It's just whatever mystery meat happens to be cheap that week.

Funny timing, i'm actually just weaning my dog off this awful crap after being an ignorant sheep for too many years. For plenty of dogs this does the trick nicely, but at least for small dogs the cost of a good quality feed is so negligible it's really worth doing imo (and is why I now am).

Even at $150 a 20kg bag (your mid range premium foods), for a 6-8kg dog that's about 100grams per serving of premium dog food. That means about ~200 days of food. Less than $1 per day for my pooch. For someone so important in my life it's really a no brainer, just wish i'd have been doing it sooner. Really should have made an effort earlier.

Again though, no shaming here. This food will work for many dogs and if it does kudos to you. No judgement here!!! :)

        • the reviews are harsh for a reason, they put the maximum amount of fillers in their food as their legally allowed to (which is a concerning amount)
if things are tight you are better of getting 2kg pet mince, frozen veg and rice!

the result is a happier and healthier dog and a happy owner that spends less at the vet

  • Most probably countrywide to clear old stock and make room for the "new formula". Might be worth checking out Woollies as well.

Dinner sorted for the rest of the month. Thanks OP.

  • Last time they changed their formula my dog got incredibly sick. Vet said he wouldnt touch the stuff with a 10 foot pole.
Now I cook my dog a shit load of rice with a couple of kg of chicken and vegetables… Saved hundreds of dollars a year and the dogs are the healthiest I've ever seen them

My dog has a mixture of white rice, beef Mince with the fat drained and frozen vegetables. She is 15 years old and seems to be healthier eating that than many different dog foods tried over the years (though I never fed her kibble only - always can food or the logs of it you cut up). At her age knowing what is in the food is very important. This was recommended by vet for a small dog of her age, everything is portion controlled too.

      • So you cook the mince, drain the fat then add it to the rice and veg? would be interested to give it a go!
15 years old?!? thats a nice innings glad to hear it

        • Correct. Now that I've moved to new Zealand dad looks after her (have had her since I was a kid at dad's house, I think the move might have been too much for her) and he follows this procedure. You could buy better Mince, but draining it and sponging with a paper towel gets most of the fat off. Then add veg and rice. I believe normal white rice is best as it digests easiest, and makes sure the veg used is dog friendly. Pretty sure it's frozen carrot pea potato mix we use. For small dog a batch of that which only takes 15 min to make lasts a week easy. My dog gets breakfast and dinner which is just half of dinner at both ends of the day. Only issue we found is the dog has gotten used to this and refuses to go back onto dog food (we had special vet only can food for our other dog that was diabetic - she lasted 14 years and the last 2 were diabetic).

  • Although I don't feed this to my dogs, for those who use this brand it's a good price.

The new formula came out in the woollies around here October last year
They did reduce the packaging size (not sure on any other sizes)
    Was 8kg normal price $22 sale $15
    New 7.5kg normal price $24

    Good points…

    Absolutely, positively, nothing.

    Bad points…

    All of it.

My mates dog (around 55kg) lived until 17. He fed it this stuff, lots of dinner scraps and the dogs favourite was the left over fat from a grill or oil from tuna can. All seemed wrong to me. My dog 22kg is now 16 and I've given him a heap more fat since I met my mates dog. He started to get arthritic around 12 years old, but now runs on beach etc. Maybe the diet change helped, dont know. In summary, don't neglect your fats and supercoat can't be that bad.
