Here's the link to the $50-100 whiskys at Dans, wondering what you all recommend.
The Ballantines seems alright at $52 ($42). I've gone off bourbon a bit, prefer my single malt scotch.

Whilst I too would suggest the Ardbeg - it's not exactly one for the Islay newbie.
Might be worth looking at the Bunnahabhain. Not easy to get, you have to order it, but a smoother, more approachable Islay within the price range.
Buy gift card then wait until a sale on your prefered brand of whiskey is on DM
I have a collection of over 20 different scotch whiskeys :-)
All are single malt except my collection of Chivas Regal which is blended. While single malt whiskey generally tastes better than blended, my favourite is the Chivas Regal 21 year old.
The 12 year old can be found for under $50 and also very nice.
Like most things in life it's a personal thing - what one person likes another will hate.
Do you know where you sit on the single malt whiskey flavour map (google it)? You could potentially just go off that.
I can't stand people that say they like singles over blends unless they state exactly which single. Out of 3 different singles you would probably only like one of them over a common blend.
Go out and buy these 3 single malts Octomore, 287 and Talisker 18. You will spend a few $100 and wish you bought 3 bottles of chivas 18 or 7 bottles of Johhnie Walker black.
Once you do know what you like and have drank numerous singles you will have a bottle or two of single in the cupboard before you get out the JW or Chivas.
My single choice is a Yamazaki or a Glen Livet 21, 2 very different singles BTW. I still can't afford to drink either of these regularly though and a simple chivas 12 or Jamisons is my go to.
Well the Ballantines isn't single malt. Not many good whisky specials at this time of the year.
Ardberg 10 would be my pick. Glen Moray 12 if you want something easier to drink and closer to $50.
