Launceston Night Life - Going out for a Drink

First timer in Launceston, spending a couple of nights there for a wedding in mid-March, along with a large contingent of friends. Most are staying in the CBD and are intending to meet up in the evenings for beers + dinner.

Anywhere must do / definitely avoid around the CBD? Are the locals receptive to outsiders? I prefer somewhere I can get a decent beer (Kosciuszko/Little Creatures/Stone & Wood etc) on tap.

Recommendations for Hobart are also greatly appreciated.

Further, if anyone has anything to add re the Binalong Bay & Freycinet areas, feel free.

TIA.

  • Bongcestion/Incestion is the worst place in Tasmania.
Locals are quite shitty people and can be rude.

The Tele in Slowbart have $5 steak and chips/parma and chips + cheap beers.

I actually like Tasmania, just not Launnnnieeeee…

  • Get some maccas

  • Don't go to the centennial, awful. Can't you stay somewhere else you poor soul?

    • Wedding is at Hadspen, so sort of have to be in Launie. What's the country club / casino like?

The local beer is very decent.
Boag's brewery is in Launceston and holds tours.
I'm not sure what draught beers you can find (by Boag's), but I found some bottles of a fantastic English-style ale. (Boag's Wizard Smith Ale)

Cascade and Van Diemen Brewing are other Tasmanian brewers, the latter being more craft beers.

Launcestoners seemed friendly enough when I was there. It's not very big, just a couple of blocks, but seemed to be well-represented in terms of pubs and bars.

There's some good dining and nice local wines too.

  • There isn't much going on in Launceston lol You'd be lucky to even see people around! There is an irish pub down the road but good luck finding some fun haha.

  • Whole of Tassie is nice, the East coast less freezing. A trip to Maria Island left awesome nature memories inside me.
Decent coffee found on the mall just ask the locals and along the water there is night life.

  • Maybe find a BYO restaurant? After a meal and drinks even the dive bars will look fine.

Not sure what the other commenters are talking about. There's a great craft beer venue in Lonnie called Saint John Craft Beer Bar. Great beer, nice people.

In Hobart, there's The Winston, Hobart Brewing Company and Shambles Brewery. All good venues.

    • Legend, thanks for the heads up - I think the others are taking the piss.

      • No worries. I guess the only issue is that Saint John's is not huge so it might be tricky if it's busy. But it's Lonnie, so could just as easily be empty. Maybe call them beforehand? I'd trust their recommendation if they can't fit you in.

In Hobart, my fave is The Winston, really good pub, but if you're lucky enough to strike good weather, the Hobart Brewing Company has a big outdoor area.

        • That's great, a few smokers amongst the crew. I'll be sure to check both venues out.
