Are Code Share Flights Upgradeable ?

I am thinking of booking a flight Syd - Sing return. As I have Virgin Velocity FFPoints it would be ideal if I booked through Virgin Australia (Singapore Airlines codeshare) and then try to upgrade the return leg for an overnight sleep.

Without being any great authority, it generally depends on the fare bucket the flight books into (usually denoted by a letter in the ticket conditions when booking). If this letter denotes a bucket that is upgradeable, then you're in business. But this then bringsinto play your question - can a code share flight be booked (i.e. the ticketing airline is not the carrying airline).

In your case, I don't think you can use velocity points to upgrade a Singapore Air flight booking to J class. However, you may be able to convert your Velocity points to your Krisflyer account and (subject to the fare bucket mentioned at top) upgrade with Singapore Air. Make sure you check all krisflyer rules regarding this.

May i suggest (depending on time needed to fly/date of flight etc), picking up a one way Scoot flight to SIN, then converting Velocity Points to Krisflyer points and booking yourself a business reward flight for the SIN-SYD leg? The scoot flight is a day flight and I find pretty bearable all things considered (especially considering the awful overnight return flights from SIN). Then a o/w Business flight from Singapore is 46750 KF points/63113 Velocity points plus a couple of hundred dollars taxes. The bonus is you could fly from most of SEA (including Hong Kong & Taiwan) thru Singapore for exactly the same no of points as simply SIN-SYD!

According to this Australian Business Traveller article regarding business class upgrades on Singapore Airlines (SQ), https://www.ausbt.com.au/singapore-airlines-business-class-u… , you can only upgrade if you book directly with SQ and (as carwashhair said) if you've booked in an eligible fare class - unfortunately codeshare flights are not upgradeable. At the bottom of the article under "A few tips … "

One final tip: you also can’t upgrade on codeshare flights – whether that’s on Singapore Airlines or with one of its partners.

To upgrade a Singapore Airlines flight, you’ll need to be booked on the SQ code
