Fee Incurred of Selling Item in eBay

I am a complete n00b in selling stuff in eBay, but did sell an item last month for $50.

First of all, when I posted the listing via Android mobile app, it did not let me post it without selecting Paypal as payment option (in addition to Payment on pickup). My intention was to only use Payment on Pickup as I know Paypal will charge me fee after the transaction.
Is this normal that to sell item in eBay, Paypal has to be used as an option??

So, now the item has been sold, and Paypal charged me $1.60 for it, which is 3.2%. I am kind of OK with it.
However, just today I received an invoice from eBay totaling $4.95 (after apparent promotional insertion fee of $1.50).
$4.95/$50 = 10% !!

In total, they charge $6.55 for $50 item, which is 13% !! That is crazy high I thought!?!
May stick to Gumtree next time with Payment on Pickup..

Again, as mentioned this is my first ever item sold in eBay so I have no idea if this fee percentage is normal, but I thought just check with more experienced people here.

is that to help paying for the discount codes we all use?

I hate to be that guy, but it's 9.9% - which is close enough to 10% anyways.

      • hmm yeah, around that.
oh, actually i always taking consideration of paypal fees as well, so yeah always think of total fees around 11-12% somewhere around that.
        well, nothing i can do.
selling on gumtree is pain in the axxxxx

I agree with Gumtree. Actually, I have a problem with meeting up in person as I would end up waiting for too long (in a shopping centre).

Instead, I prefer to have the money handed to me and post it off in my own time.

  • That's why I only sell on eBay when I get the promotion offer to list and sell with no final value fee's

    • how to get this notification? I never seen such thing listed in OzB either unless I am not observant enough!

    • How often do you get the offer?

      • Cant remember the total times but I'm sure I took up the over in two different months.

  • The fees are normal, for eBay, but they're pretty exorbitant imo. I try sell on OZB or Gumtree if possible.

    • Yes, I am thinking to stick it only in Gumtree but the item is quite niche so eBay would capture bigger market, which is true since no enquiries on the same item listed in Gumtree..

Have u tried buying/selling via OzB ? Many interests? Better than gumtree?

      • I'll list on OZB and Gumtree, if little interest is shown, I'll list on eBay for 10 days and pull the other listings (OZB & GT) on the 9th day of being on eBay (you can't pull an eBay listing within 24 hours of ending)

        • why would you pull the other listings (in gumtree and ozb) on the 9th day? Why dont use just leave it there assuming the item has not been sold?

        • @OzFrugie: You can't pull an eBay listing within 24 hours of ending, this is assuming someone has bid on your item, eBay essentially commits you to the sale at this point, so no point in keeping it listed elsewhere.

        • @matthewk85:

Ah okay you were talking about selling via auction, which in my case was not.

          Cheers

but the item is quite niche so eBay would capture bigger market

That, right there, is the reason why ebay have these high fees. They know that ebay is the place for obscure and cheap stuff, especially how it has established its brand name very well over the years.

Very normal. You should do some research on the fees before doing anything next time so you don't get nasty surprises.

Welcome to Feebay! I used to be a powerseller and this aergument is as old as feebay. If there was a viable alternative Feebay wouldnt exist, the problem is that places with lower fees and better service have no customers to buy your listed stuff! Setting up and marketing your own website can be compliucated and very expensive for small/home businesses. The answer is to add ebay's fees into your price. This often makes Feebay more expensive than elsewhere. Feebay have previously tried several times to remove all payment options other than Paypal, presumably for everyone's protection. To date the customer backlash has stopped them but who knows what will happen in the future.

Well, there is quicksales. It turned over a tiny 0.6% of my old ebay business, lol.

  • Very normal. Be thankful your livelihood does not draw a steady income from eBay. Last month our fees were north of $2k. Then there's tax, PayPal, AusPost etc etc.

  • Is the Final Value Fee (of $4.95 in this case) a flat fee or a percentage by the way?

    • +1

It's a percentage, 9.9% of the final sale amount on all sales you make on eBay.

  • Dumb-Dumb. Always read the terms and conditions! yes the eBay charges are correct. You have just made an enormous fool of yourself by posting this here. Use Gumtree to sell next time. Its totally free. However Paypal will always deduct a fee when used as payment option. You dont need to include paypal with Gumtree.

It depends on how much you value your time. Gumtree is full of low life time wasters. Saving $6 is hardly worth the time and effort.

  • If possible, I'd select both options.

Yes it's normal, but exorbitant imo.

If you're savvy, you can utilise Gumtree much more effectively and pay 0 fees (if it's still the same as last time I sold on Gumtree, you can state cash on pickup only and have that as the only option as well).

  • You should never accept PayPal for pickup. I hope you haven't been scammed.

    • I've heard plenty of stories of guys who try to negotiate the price during a cash on pickup.
