Renault Koleos and Nissan X-Trail - What to Buy? Advise Please

Looking to buy a replacement X-Trail (wife doesn't really want to look at anything else.) Budget $30-$35K. (would prefer to spend $zero but that won't happen :) )

Took a few drives of other types, most she doesn't like, too small usually.

She really like the X-Trail ST-L - mid-range model, leather seats, sat nav, all round camera etc. Its around $34k new without any negotiation, so possibly less in reality.

Saw a Renault Koleos today and it looks pretty nice, basically an X-Trail mechanically, different looks inside and out.
The Zen model is mid range , like the nissan ST-L I guess, but both have different things.
We haven't driven one yet but I guess it will drive the same.
They have one thats done 4000km (so almost new), 2 months old and around $32k - normal is around $39k.

Nissan services are every 10000kn/6months fixed about $250 per, Renault is 25000km/12month fixed about $299.

Whats a better buy, or suggest some other brand but we havent seen one that my wife likes, not Mazda CX5 (too small and plain looking), Hyundai Santa Fe too expensive, Nissan QashQai, Ford Kuga too small.
She doesn't want a car.

Pick my choices apart, good or bad please. Renaults OK to have?

If the Nissan is $34k rrp, what would be a reasonable discounted price we could get, same with the Renault?

  • Financially the Renault wins but how often do you resell and what price would each attain then ?
Having a good run with our Honda CRV Sports Classic.

    • we had an xtrail for years, time for a new car and wife still wants an xtrail (its her car so she can buy what she wants but hoping she tries others out too).

I wonder about resell in 5 years too, will Renault still be in Australia then?

  • Personally I would not buy either but if it means a happy wife go the Nissan.

You need deep pockets to service and keep European crap on the road in OZ. They are just not built for our conditions. Citroen, Alfa, Peugeot, Renault, Golf etc/.

Many years ago my Dad had a Mercedes 240D Cost a fortune here to buy. In Germany they were used as Taxis. Cheap as buggery over there.

    • Looking at other SUVs around the same price these seem to be ahead in size and value unless someone can hint at some other brand.

I assume the renault and Nissan are built the same seeing they are exactly the same mechanicals (Renault/Nissan partnered for these). But I understand what you mean and I too wonder if the xtrails a better deal for 5 years of ownership.

Nice rant, however completely irrelevant as the Koleos is built on the same platform as the X Trail

  • Drive both and decide? Renault's warranty seems better, longer and unlimited KM, and servicing is cheaper?

    • Drove the Xtrail a few times, will be driving the Renault on the weekend. I assume they will drive the same seeing they are both basically the same mechanicals. Servicing cheaper for 3 years but not capped after that so wonder how expensive then.

I read that review but they were comparing the midrange Koleos to the base model Xtrail - not a good comparison I think.

      • As Rocky mentions, resale on the Renault isn't as good. That being said, if your intention is to keep the car for 5+ years it's less of an issue as once a car is old enough the depreciation will plateau.

Same mechanicals, but different drive. Also different look and feel inside. You might prefer one over the other. Even things like driving position, you might find yourself more comfortable in one than the other.

        • thanks.
As mentioned below, the Xtrail, to me, is better kitted out, more extras are included - eg the rears seats can recline and are on rails so you can move forward and back - like front seats do. Koleos are fixed.
Xtrail driver and passenger seats are electric for adjusting, Koleos are only the driver side.
          Koleos isnt bad just different.

I gues what I really wanted was someone saying - stay clear they are terrible.:)

One thing - Xtrail is made in Japan, Koleos is made in Korea. Does that really matter though?

        • @PVA:

I honestly don't think it matters where they are made. The Xtrail certainly sounds like it's got some good features. The rears moving would be useful if you have car seats or baby capsules to save front seats having to move forward etc.

Also depends on who gives you the best deal hhahaha

        • @nafe:
          yeah, true.

I'll wait till we drive the Renault and go from there.
Was hoping someone would jump in and say stay clear of Renault for xxx reason. That would make our choice easy then.

  • Bargain rule number 1

    Cost of ownership.

Renaults havent got as good a resale value as Nissan or other brands

While they are on the same base, there are differences.

Eg Renault requires premium unleaded vs Nissan Standard unleaded

See here and compare total costs on the models you are considering

    https://www.mynrma.com.au/mynrma/operating-costs-calculator/…

Also cars guide says av sale price of a 2012 Koleos to a 2012 Xtrail is $17K vs 19K

    • thanks.
Seems at the moment the wife likes the Xtrail, will drive Koleos on Saturday.
Looking at both mid range models, the Xtrail is kitted out better - and has leather seats, Renaults seats are all vinyl (they say artificial leather :) ) though they are soft and comfortable.

The brochure says Unleaded for the new model, no mention of premium, so I will check that out.

      • Hi, How did the Koleos drive in the end? I'm in the same boat picking between the two now

        • Really nice I think. The wife loves it.
Overall the Koleos is a nicer vehicle than the xtrail and worked out cheaper.
Renault has 3 years of free services, the same in the Nissan is around $1500 going by the Nissan dealer. Also Renault has 5 year warranty, Nissan is 3 and a few thousand for another 2.
Renault also said the 5 year warranty is extended to 7 if you still own it after 5 years, break down cover included.

Reverse camera also has sensors that been ( front too) , Nissan is just a camera.
Auto light, auto wipers, fog light turn on in corners to help you see around the bend ( prob a gimmick). Interior looks a feels better and I love how you can have not just the centre entertainment area to you liking but also the dash and each driver has their own preset. - eg you might like tachometer a digital speed, wife might like normal speedo a green colour. Get the dealer to show you, not as gimmicky as it sound , I like it.

Plus I think it looks better, not just another xtrail driving around.

    • Just seeing we bought the Renault. It uses normal unleaded not premium and free services for three years vs around $1500 for the Nissan( Renault is fixed at $299 per year after that)

  • Hope you're liking your Renault.
I was going to suggest the Outlander too, but I am a bit too late. I have driven one and it is pretty similar to the X-trail.
I am wondering why there is a difference in service intervals between the Koleos and the X-trail for basically the same car…

    • +1

Yes, great vehicle. Wife loves the car, more than the xtrail we had.

Why the difference, Nissan makes more money. Same with Mazda I remember the 3 model in Australia is 6 month/ 10000km, but overseas it's 12 month/ 20000km for the same model. All to make some extra dollars and allowing the purchase price to be cheaper I guess.

      • PVA - hows your renault going on and how much you bought it for:) Please advise.

    • Outlander is a pathetic drive. Struggles quite a bit with passengers. Also engine and cvt sounds so overworks going through the leafy/hilly parts of melb suburbia.

Like PVA partner settled with Koleos Zen.. Wouldve been good for intens diesel but thats going beyond budget. Had settled 33k with 4x4 zen demo. Wish it included the safety pack advanced emergency braking system etc
