This is by far the funniest Broadway show I've ever seen. Even if you pay full price it's worth every cent.

    • +1

Agree, insanely hilarious! Not to be missed

    • I've only heard the songs but I already fell in love with the musical. I got the album on repeat for several months back then! Can't wait until it comes to Perth… which hopefully is not too long :(

      • +1

"Turn It Off" is probably my favourite!

        • Yep. That and Spooky Mormon Hell Dream!!

  • +1

Is this like The Book Of Scientology?

    • +3

It's written by the creators of South Park. As in the musical version is.

      • +1

Nice, thanks, must be great then.

      • -1

Is this a sequel to Orgazmo?

        • -6

Anyone who voted this down is ignorant.

        • @PainToad:

The ignorance is strong I see.

      • And music by the guy who did Frozen!

        • +1

          Just, let it go…

  • +7

they are funny enough when they knock on my door

    • +2

And they are nice too - invited them in for drinks and chat a couple of times.

  • Great deal. Wish we could buy online at that price as I'll be working, but good for those that are able to get there!

  • +1

I would be genuinely interested to know if any of our LDS members have seen/would see the show?

I'm not trolling either, not looking to start any theological hate threads, and I have the utmost respect for LDS, I've never met a nasty one…but I'm truly interested in knowing whether this would be too offensive for them?

    • +9

I'm ex-LDS. It's rather offensive to some of them, but they can't really complain as NONE of the theology is fiction. Well, it's all fiction, but they all believe it.

      • +1

I'm also ex-mormon. This is pretty darn offensive to Mormons (not a good thing). It's hilarious though.

    • +5

Seems many Mormons (LDS members) don't take offence. http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/religion/2011-03-18-Morm…

The writers went to great lengths to ensure everything in the show is 100% accurate as it relates to the actual "Book", so in many respects there is nothing for believers to be offended by.

Indeed, as an atheist, the accuracy of the production is what makes it even funnier for me…. you're sitting there saying to to yourself "can this be for real?"…..the answer is yes!

That said most of the show (and laughs) is character driven.

      • +6

Just like what South Park is known for: accuracy.

        • +3

As an ex-mormon I can tell you that the show is 100% theologically accurate. They nailed it.

    • +4

      https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/i-asked-some-mormons-what…

Like all good satire, it's funny because it's true.

    • +5

I'm a Mormon and saw it when I was in London. I have pretty thick skin. I think that any member of an organised religion would find it as offensive as LDS members as the message is anti-regilion/God not just anti-LDS

Most of my Mormon friends have no interest in seeing it - I'm debating whether I should see it again as some of the songs are very good (I have a couple saved on spotify)

      • Can't see why it would be classified as "anti-regilion/God" if anything it does a great job of explaining Mormon theology. If anything that's pro-mormon!

Granted, not in the same way that the Mormons would prefer. Things like ancient jews sailing (in boats without sails because god pushed them via magic) to america and founding america, they like to surprise on punters after roping them in with all the warm and fuzzy stuff.

        • It is anti-religion. I know many non-LDS people who saw it and come away much more offended; I don't know how you could think it isn't anti-religion. Not all the stuff in it is correct, but most is - explained in a comical way. Even your comments on using "magic" and "founding America" are incorrect

        • -3

          @dein_gesicht:

I've never read or seen anything indicating this is anti religion. I didn't find it anti religion or anti LDS at all. You laughed with the Mormon characters not at them.

I think that any member of an organised religion would find it as offensive.

Keep in mind this has been one of the biggest Broadway comedy hits ever in the most religious western country in the world by a very significant measure. No production being perceived as "anti religion" would survive, let alone thrive, in such a market.

        • @dein_gesicht: This is definitely anti-religion.

  • +15

I might buy some tickets for some of my wives.

    • Nah save some cash, you go and I'll look after them ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • +1

Pretty sure polygamy is no longer a practice anymore (unless you are talking about some sects). I asked the Elders I interacted with specifically about this :-)

      • +2

No longer permitted. But it was once encouraged and the original prophet Joseph Smith had heaps of wives. https://www.lds.org/topics/plural-marriage-in-kirtland-and-n…

Including one wife who was only 14 years old

None of this is disputed by the church.

It's pretty nuts, because Joseph Smith also married women who were already married to others. Makes little sense because one of the core teachings of he LDS is that marriage persists in the "after life". Sort that mess out.

God works in truly mysterious ways

Great and balanced coverage of the issues here: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/11/11/us/its-official-mormon-…

        • Read through the articles you provided. So interesting; provided additional insights and historical context on this topic with Mormons. Thanks.

no online tickets?…. i dont comprehend

Because they'd crash and everyone would complain they didn't get a chance

I hope they bring this to Brisbane!

  • For Melbournians lucky enough to score tickets to LION on the same day https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/284720 - Combine with this deal for a Bargain marathon!

Can't do this as they are on at the same time.

The Book of Mormon - Performance begins Tuesday 17th January 7:00pm
    Princess Theatre, Melbourne
163 Spring Street, Melbourne VIC 3000

  • Highly recommended! Hilarious. Saw it in London and I think I actually let out a bit of pee a few times, it was that funny.

Sensitive types should stay away, language and themes are extreme.

  • It is hilarious. Spoke to some Mormons from Salt Lake City in US and they said that the Mormons they knew loved it. Guess they saw it as a spoof on the highs and lows of their missionary efforts. Great fun. Forget about political correctness and enjoy the high camp jokes. Well worth it.

  • Saw it in London, it is brilliant. Definitely snap up tickets.

  • +1

Damn I paid full price for my tickets!

    • Yeah (profanity) we spent a fortune on the expensive (profanity),

      • +1

yeah paid $500~ for two seats, they're pretty good, 3rd row in the middle

  • +1

How many tickets are available? I lined up a couple of times in New York trying to score $30 tickets but, as expected, demand far exceeded supply and I didn't get a $30 ticket (Got a full price one in the end. I'll check my Ozbargain card at the door on my way out).

    • How long did you line up for? I know Wicked did cheap tix one day via coupon in the paper and people got there hours earlier.

Thinking of coming at 8am, is that too late?

      • It was a lotto, so you put your name down at like 3pm, then come back at like 6pm and they draw the names out of a hat.

      • Wicked was free same day tickets and not the best seats in the house but people including myself were lined up for at least 4 hours in winter.

8am may not be early enough. Many I know are planning to get there around 6! But then again the whole theatre is on offer so there are many more seats?

If only I worked in the cbd I'd be lining up too!

    • You can always ask them on Instagram by commenting on their bargain post?

      • I do not have Instagram haha. Also not particularly bothered as I don't live in Melbourne, but it would be handy information for others.

    • +1

The email I got mentions that it's all seats, so the entire theatre's capacity would be the amount available I assume.

    • Email said it is an extra performance put on. And it does not seem to be sold via the usual channels like Ticketmaster, so presumably there will be lots more seats on offer - maybe the entire theatre. Unlike some other cheap offers, which are essentially padding up vacant seats.

  • In Melbourne :(

  • +1

"Normally tickets range from $50.80 to $130 + booking fees."

They're definitely dearer, I paid $160 for mine and there were $200+ ones available at time of bookings.

This is in fact a ridiculously good price but I imagine it will require several hours of wait time.
Look forward to seeing these being pawned of for 100+

    • Oh I picked a random date and that's the range it came with. I'll update the post. Ta.

edit I also re-read the email and also updated the post to say that you can only buy 2 per person and your name will be on the ticket and also checked on entry to the theatre. So not sure if there'll be any scalping if they do this.

  • -3

If its Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons you can rest easy knowing both 'groups' were founded by the freemasons

  • +3

Just a note for those that do miss out or want to see another date; I've seen Matilda at the same theatre and can very much vouch for the restricted view seats around S11 in stalls. There's a pole in front of the seat but it doesn't really cover any of the stage at all as it's off to the side. Having said that, I don't know the stage layout for BoM but I guarantee you won't miss much at all.

  • +4

Was fortunate in London 2015 to get the £20 ticket draw they do every day and got front row seats.

The show was very funny and uses a good mix of physical comedy and very catchy songs to present a great show.

My usual style is Les Mis, Phantom and Love Never Dies type and so this was a refreshing shock to my usual musical fare. That being said, I would possibly see it again at the $20 level but not at regular prices.

For the record I have seen Les Mis 5 times and Phantom 6 as a point of reference.

  • +1

Look like it will be 2 tickets/Person!

    Confirmed via Instagram:
"nicolehendrieIs there a limit to how many tickets you can purchase? bookofmormonau:@nicolehendrie 2 per person 👭"

  • +2

Do we know how many $20 tix are available in total? Might be a waste of time to make it there only to find out there were only 10 or 20 available~!

    • All seats are $20 so possibly the whole theatre.

    • Supposed to be an extra performance - good odds.

  • +1

Saw this in New York it's a fantastic show

  • Bought full price, totally worth it based on the soundtrack I've been listening to for the last couple of years! Can't wait to see the staging, and on Valentines Day with m'lady!

I will be lining up to try and get tickets for my sister anyway. See y'all there.

  • Not worth the risk in case of Mormon extremists..

    • +3

I'd be worried about other extremists storming in, before I worry about Mormon extremists :-)

    • +1

It'll be fine, I'm working both Australia Day and Midsumma Parade. More to worry about there :P

    • +1

      Mormons are peaceful people

      • +1

that's what they want you to believe…

  • +2

Do they give you a free pair of magic underwear?

  • If I can find my ozbaragin shirt in time, I'll be wearing it!

  • Saw it in London and walked out with my jaw hurting from the continuous laughter!

  • at what time are you guys thinking of queuing up? I'll be wearing my ozb tshirt :)

  • +4

People already queuing up for this! Only another 14 hrs until the box office opens..

    • You're kidding! Already?! How many did it look like

      • Eek, yeah im interested to know how many people are there!

        • +1

Just did a drive by… Around 20 in the queue.

        • @mwalexander: Crazy! Anyone going?

This was an hour ago, but yeah it's longer now.
          https://www.facebook.com/TheatrePeople/photos/a.393049569655…

        • +1

@anastasiastarz: That is pure bananas. But if seating numbers are correct, there should be 1550 tickets up for grabs. So as long as you're theoretically one of the first 775 in line (if everyone decides to purchase 2) we'd be ok!

I wonder if they're going to allocate seating or actually let everyone go through the process of choosing on their own.

        • @Princeyboy: I'd say it's assigned to make the process faster. Going to be hilarious when the card machines fail.

Thinking of going at midnight (last train) maybe.

  • +2

About 50 people in line now… If you're there for 12 hrs and you save $150 you've made $12.50 per hour! Tax free mind you ;)

    • +1

Back in June, I was able to secure $66 tix for this show, and it is for the week after this. When I first saw this deal, I was thinking, hmm, maybe I should have waited. But now, knowing how early people start queuing, I am glad I bought the tix back then. Although $46 more, for 12 hours queuing, that equates to $3.83/hr, and no sleep. Besides, although limited choice, I got to choose the seating.

      • Damn missed that, was in on ozbargain?

        • +1

No it wasn't. I did think of posting it, but I had posted a few shows and they were not that popular with OzBargainers. So I didn't think this would be either. Maybe $20-45 is the price range considered a real bargain.

BTW I also think that later in the run, the cheaper tix will come again.

Gone around the corner. Normal people coming at 5am. We totally could have came at five.

  • +2

Good Luck! Hope the queuing efforts net you all great seats! :-)
Interesting to hear live updates, and thanks for the pics too.

  • +2

Just got here…queue has looped around to Exhibition and Bourke.

  • +2

We should totally do an ozbargain lunch meetup via dimmi with a 50% deal!

    • Do you know why the queue just moved up a whole bunch?
