Worm in Baby Formula

Hi Guys,

I bought Nestle Pro 1 Gold for my daughter. After using few scoops from it I found dead worm inside the container.

It's shocking. This formula is for babies upto 6 months and they have no immunity.

I called the customer care but not impressed with the response.

I need advice how can I tackle the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Updates:

Nestle customer care called me and has arranged a collection of the container so they can investigate.

  • Dead worms or a dead worm? Did you immediately take a picture and collect the worm(s) in one of those resealable sandwich bags?

Collect the evidence and email their Head Office and tell them what you want. I don't think they want this to be on ACA.

    • This. If they still ignore you start ringing ACA/Today Tonight - that seems like something people need to be scared about!

As a guide my parents found the tip of a rubber glove inside a block of butter. They got free butter delivered for a year.

a partial glove material can be traced back to their stock. one dead worm can be traced back zilch.

Did the rubber glove have a reservoir at the end?

Nestle won't be at all concerned about ACA. Meal moth larva by the look of it, a common pest and not anything to worry about, even for 6 month old.

      • Are these also called pantry moths? If so, that's why I hesitate to buy bulk food. Buy 10 bags of odds and ends and you are sure to get pantry moths in 2 -3.

Op, keep a good eye out for dark things nesting in your cornices. These could be cocoons and there always a chance you had them and one slipped in the tin. They are very crafty, for a bug.

Extra protein….. good for muscle tone.

Picture on their facebook and you will get immediate attention.

  • It's just one worm. Even that should not be there. I have taken photo and sent them in facebook pm. Now they will send prepaid envelope so I can sent it back and they can investigate.

I found one of these in a bottle of spirits.

Was it made in Mexico by any chance?

    • +4

Yep, it looks like a small moth larvae … which could have got into the tin after you opened it…

        • I have seen the exact same thing in my pantry. The moths lay their eggs around the edge of the tin lid and it only takes one microscopic egg to fall into the tin when you're opening the lid to have a larvae in your tin!

        • +2

They can get into unopened packaging. They can certainly get into opened pack, even if you have re-sealed it.

      • I think there is a issue with product itself. My daughter refused bottle made from that formula where as she happily takes bottle made from different container (same brand).

Or it probably got there after you used it previously.

  • Don't worry. Nestle will either give you new can or a full refund. Take the refund and buy another brand.

There can be some complications for not giving breast milk. I do not want share all that issues.

      • +3

Bit harsh to neg for this. There are numerous reasons why breast milk isn't feasible. Both my kids were raised mainly on formula, they've worked out fine.

That said, I wouldn't make such a big deal about a larvae in this.

Both my kids were raised mainly on formula, they've worked out fine.

But they could've been better on breast milk…

    • +1

Very surprised at the neg voter's, breast is best none of that fake milk thank-you.

Opinion based on my medical background, which if your a good stalker on here you may find out what I do.

      • Med background here too.

I didn't expect neg votes either. I wasn't telling the OP what to do, or criticising them for feeding formula. I realise it's a sensitive subject and that there are reasons why some women cannot physically breastfeed and therefore they should not feel guilty for being unable to provide it to their babies.

But with limited info from the OP and the topic of an infant's immunity being raised, I simply felt it was important to point out that breast milk is the best source of passive immunity, for those who may not realise it and are opting for formula for other reasons (like convenience).

Whatever though. This is OzBargain, and I've learned that most people are happier to leave a neg vote without debating intelligently why they disagree, or explaining why they disagree or dislike a comment.

          3 reasons for my negs:

          1. OP sought advice on obtaining satisfactory customer service — not a lecture on the merits of breastfeeding.

          2. The tone used came across as insensitive and judgemental.

          3. Citing a "medical background " is vague and can't be viewed as a source of credibility. Medicine is a broad field of study that people specialise in. A janitor in a hospital has a "medical background" as does a GP, nurse, physiotherapist, X-ray tech, etc.

        • Making assumptions based on a couple of sentences with your medical background…

I say stay in school or pick another profession.

        • Thanks @meggowaffle:
          My reasons too.

        • Bit late now to lecture the mother who, knowing all of her circumstances, made the choice.

I called the customer care but not impressed with the response.

    What was their response?

  • Reminds me of the time I opened a packet of microwaveable pasta and found a hundred tiny living bugs inside which had been eating it! Sent a photo to the company and they apologised and sent me a huge box of replacements back. They blamed it on their storage process.

  • Contact TGA and ask them what the process is and if they will investigate

  • Scoop it out, use boiling water to mix formula, give to baby, move on with your life. The amount of bugs/germs your baby is going to ingest over the next couple of years will be worse.

    • I'm more sympathetic of the fact that if I paid money, I'd expect a certain health/hygiene standard =)

Kind of like if I bought a business shirt in a packet that came out with a moth hole. Yeh, clothes get holes eventually but I certainly didn't pay money to get it like that =)

  • +2

6 month olds have pretty good immunity actually. Good evidence that keeping things too sterile for babies is harmful and as someone else said they will eat a lot worse over the next couple of years.

    • So should we start mixing dirt into their food?

      • +3

Parents don't need to. Kids do it for themselves.

  • Take it back to the shop and get replacement or refund.

What would you consider a reasonable outcome? Knowing what you would be satisfied with is probably the way to start.

If they could pinpoint where the issue may have arisen and rectify it, would that satisfy your concerns about the fact this powder is marketed to 0-6 monthers?

Would you ever want to use this brand again?

What sort of refund would you be happy with? Do you want any compensation (what are the acutal and potential harms?)
