How to fix cracks in lawn soil and make it nutrient rich?

I need advice of fellow Ozbargainers who are expert in maintaining lawn.

My lawn has started developing cracks and this issue has become worse since the beginning of summer. Grass has become yellowish at quite a few places and the cracks develop where the grass is completed dried.

Google search suggests that the soil lacks wetting and it is also depleted of nutrients. Should I put a layer of organic compost followed by fertiliser to rectify this issue? If yes, which of the following options I should use.

1) http://anlscape.com.au/Products/composts-and-soil-conditione…

2) https://www.bunnings.com.au/richgro-25l-all-purpose-organic-…

3) https://www.bunnings.com.au/hortico-15kg-organic-lawn-fertil…

Alternatively, please advise your solution.

  • In the long-run, the mulching lawnmovers really work, to keep the lawn lush without any extra fertiliser. But this takes time, as in a few years. If you need to take remedial action now, it is not going to help in the short-term. But something to consider for the long-term after you fix your lawn.

The other thing is avoid cutting the lawn grass too low or scalping the lawn. To keep lawn healthy, during winter/cool periods, using a pitchfork and stabbing the lawn to aerate it is supposed to be good (we only did a little of this; hard work :-)).

Still, managed to convert a very clayish/unhealthy lawn to one that is fairly lush now. Mostly due to the self-mulching, I think. Also, saves having to empty grass catcher :-)

    • +1

cool advice. I think scalping is also contributing to my lawn disaster.

  • My understanding that one of the best ways to wet the soil is to water it with water with soap/detergent in it. I guess it breaks up the waxes and oils.

  • water with hand sprayer at dusk or dawn. Don't do it during sunny hours
Use organic lawn top soil, to top dress lawn
    Mow every 2 weeks
    Use Shirley's no 17
    Use dinamic lifter
Use soil wetting agent for lawns.

    • Thanks. What height no. do you use for lawn mower?

      I am doing 3.

  • It depends on the species of grass
Buffalo sir Walter palmetto etc setting three is good
