New phones vs years ago

Had my phone (Galaxy s5 for a couple of years). Absolutely no issues whatsoever. Thinking to myself I could sell the S5 and get a Zuk Z2 with the money and have a new phone with twice the RAM / storage etc - financially it'll be no different

But really what is the point. I can understand if a phone is 5 years + old, back then there was a big difference between a cheap vs flagship phone.

These days each upgrade is only sightly better.

So my question is what is it you do with the phone to justify that 2gb vs 3gb ram or 2ghz vs 2.5ghz, or 60min charge vs 90min charge time. Maybe the camera??

Dont get me wrong tablets - thats a different story, but I'm talking about a regular 5" phone - calls/texts/light gaming/browsing.

Should i keep or get rid of it?

Unless you're truly feeling the need to upgrade don't upgrade.
If your phone is in good working order and you're not feeling any lag in the way you use it, or it's not hindering the way you would like to use a phone it then there's no need to upgrade.

    • Agree, upgrade when there are better features to receive benefits. You pay for a phone and expect to last at least 2y or have surpassing technology by 2y time. But if your phone isn't broken and there are no better features to receive benefits for, just wait until there is a great sale offer

I only upgrade when they break, or they shut the network (CDMA)
got 17 years out of my first two phones.

  • I recently upgraded from an S5 to a Pixel XL and I'm lovin' it!

Used to upgrade every 2yrs when the contract ran out. Same as you, have the S5, felt no need, went onto a $40 Mx BYO plan and loving the lower bill cost ;)

    • Im the same as you - middle of last year got out of my second 24month contract and realised that my phone still worked fine and that i didnt need a new phone. On a $40 optus byo with 10g data. Saving $60 a month for as long as i keep my phone and will likely look at buying a new phone in 6 or so months - but definitely not a flagship one

  • Buy it outright, you save more long term if you can afford to pay 700ish on the spot. Get the XZ dual from hong kong, cheaper than both those phones AUS prices. And the best seller in the android market.
