Help: Changing Car Insurance after an Accident

Hi all,

Quick question on car insurance questions:
Long story short, my wife had a car accident about 5 months ago, and because of that it raises our premium by about 30%.

When I am browsing for new insurance, one of the insurance question is: Any motor insurance claims in the last 5 years (whichever is at fault)?
Can I answer this as a no?
Technically I didn't claim the insurance, my wife did.
However the insurance account was under my name, so I did.

Supposedly I ask a family member (who has never made a claim) to create new insurance account (they don't own the car), will it be ok?

Thanks

I wouldnt give them a reason to riggle out at claim time.

Not being honest and trying to get out on a technicality will just allow the insurance company to void your cover. There are no loop holes to be exploited here, all that will happen is that you will find you are without cover when you need it the most!

  • You should look at the wording of the question carefully. Is it referring to claims made by the Main Driver or is it referring the any claims on your policies?

If you answer yes without checking properly, you could be paying a higher premium for nothing.

However, if you say "No" and the answer should be "Yes", then the insurance company will still accept your premium payment for whatever number of years until you try to make a claim. Then they'll use the "disclosure" clause to void your policy if they find out.

The best thing to do would be to call and speak to them to get some clarity around what they are actually asking. If they say that you can answer "No", make sure that you have it in writing so they can't deny cover at the time of a claim.

    • Thanks mate, I'll do like that then

No, That's fraud. It's illegal, against the terms and conditions of any insurance provider and would give them a reason not to pay.

Oh I didn't know that the owner of the car must be the person that own the insurance

      • The owner of the car doesn't have to be the policy holder (main driver).

To answer your question, I think it's OK to answer no claim for you as the policy inquirer but once you add your wife as a secondary driver with disclosed (which is a must) previous claim the premium will just offset the savings you make. It's the driver that adds the risk, not the existing car. The existing car damage history is answered in the question part about existing damage not repaired.

  • If you have an accident then I'm sure the insurance company would find out but then laugh it off and pay out your claim anyway. they want to keep customers happy and will more often than not turn a blind eye to this type of deception.
