I see that Hotels.com is now listing a lot of hotels as not eligible for Free night rewards (1 per 10 nights stay)

I do a lot of hotels research, and recently was the first time that I have seen this from Hotels.com. Before that this it was only when using a discount code that you wouldn't get the rewards.
Hotels have wisened up and its normally cheaper to book direct rather than line the pockets of "other site"
I have found you get better upgrades / rates / freebies booking directly
Not really a new issue, have been booking with them for several years now and have noticed a lot of the lower cost places don't accumulate Hotels Rewards
It's weird. On my personal laptop is sometimes said the hotels can't collect nights but when I looked on my work laptop or via the app, it said I could. I recently collected nights for stays that apparently I couldn't collect nights for if I booked through my personal laptop. Try the app perhaps?

it keeps people loyal to a particular chain of hotel / branch
Most hotel chains offer their "own" loyalty programs so I think you will find this is the case
