Call your local police station and let them know you witnessed/have footage of the incident.

Bare in mind, they may resolve the matter without making a police report (so no witness may be required).

    • Here's a few problems with this footage:

      1. look at the poor resolution, you can barely make out whats going on, which leads to…

      2. the footage is not a 'smoking gun'… the nature of that kind of accident does not need 3rd parties to corroborate.

Its clear the party who T-boned the other van is at fault and no video is needed to make that determination.

Therefore, OP should pack it up and mind his own business.

      The end.

      • The resolution is 1080p- it's just from far away. Is that what you meant?

Its clear the party who T-boned the other van is at fault and no video is needed to make that determination.

Depends, maybe the other guy was running a red as the other vehicles in his direction were stopped at the lights.

        • All other traffic was stopped, I'd think the guy who GOT T-boned was at fault.

        • Agreed. The collision was at 0:07, the light for the camera car changed at 0:11: given 4 seconds for the orange light it looks like the vehicle approaching from the left was entering the intersection on an early orange (and the guy behind him thought there was enough time, obviously), and the other vehicle jumped a very red light and got hit.

ACA/Today tonight…. make some money out of it.

Next time, pull over and let them know you have the footage so they can get it from you later if they request/need it?

    • That did come to mind, but it's a divided road, I was on the other side, I had other passengers at the time, and I guess I wasn't motivated enough to come back.

  • Make a police report yourself.

Make a copy of the SD Card in case they want you to surrender it.

Keep a copy of the footage and the report you lodge.

    Based on:
    http://www.snarl.com.au/incidents/single/277826
it doesn't appear there are "other" cameras on that intersection.

So your footage might be unique and exclusive.

Odd that the incident times vary, but may be a gap between actuality and reporting.

Thanks for this. The time on my dashcam was wrong, and that 11:50am time seems about right. I'll update the post.

  • I think in the future there will be a website where citizens sell footage even to law enforcement. If I was Rupert Murdoch or such, I'd be striking deals with houses on strategic street corners to take security footage. In so many crimes these days, it's business or domestic footage that is the best lead. I think it should be commercial as there are running costs and effort involved. Yeah, I'm loopy, but if there was a google map/streetview equivalent with gps and timestamped public footage of dashcams and security cameras for a fee it would be incredibly successful

    • 1984 just arrived. lol

      • I don't think so. Anyone going Christmas shopping would have already been filmed countless times. The ability to take public security or dashcam footage already exists. It's just a matter of organising or commercialising it so that more people take footage for a constructive purpose. As more and more cars get dashcam cameras, why wouldn't they be the single best resource for missing person cases or witnessing party accidents.
You should also consider that the exact same equivalent already tracks so much of your online behaviour, be it shopping patterns or Brandis' metadata.

          Yes, I understand.

But, by the same token, what would stop people bidding for and owning and then suppressing said content contrary to their (own) interests.

But, I guess what you are talking about or hoping for is fair restitution for the common benefit.

        • I dont want to live in the dystopian future that Frugal Rock wants. Then again mental health surely is an issue we should be tackling as seen by people like this.

        • @tonyjzx:
It looks like 2017 isn't going to be your year of punctuation, after all. I'll leave my mental health diagnoses to literates, thanks.

          @Frugal Rock:

Dont point out nothing though. I think people already know that falling back onto punctuation isnt really an argument at all. That sort of thing was old 5 years ago and yet its something you want to make new in 2017.
