I got this camera for $780 after using this link to match the price in local shopping center. This camera comes with a bonus 25mm lens from Panasonic. It presents a better value than the Sony A6000 deal as it records in 4K and has 5-axis image stabilizer.

    • Thanks for backing that valuable opinion up with facts.

It's a fact that the Sony will give you better dynamic range, more resolution and better high ISO performance.

        • And with this you get 4k video, IBIS, subjectively better controls etc. Just saying 'This sucks' adds nothing to the comments.

        • @Merlict: Who said 'this sucks'? I actually just gave you the facts you were asking for.

There's a reason why DPReview rates the G85 higher than both the recent a6300 & a6500 cameras, and the GX85 isn't that dissimilar. The three year old a6000, while still a decent camera, just isn't in the conversation anymore.

The IBIS is huge in general but also means a few stops lower ISO at night. Therefore the GX85 will have superior low light image quality with wider dynamic range. The DFD autofocus is much quicker and more accurate. It's faster even than the a6500 for AF-S but can't keep up with the newer Sonys for AF-C. Still it does a surprisingly excellent job for a CDAF based system.

Also the touch screen makes for a much more friendly and intuitive experience. Being able to move the focus point with your finger/thumb is awesome (esp while looking through the EVF). Sony's "press mulitple buttons multiple times" method is looking a little long in the tooth these days (it infuriates me no end with my RX100IV).

And of course the video quality is in a different league.

        • @Emeric:

Stop chasing the better camera every year. Small changes to your camera's capability will only make small changes when you're shooting under the most challenging conditions. For the most improvement pick your subjects better and learn how to use a camera better. Upgrade every few years…and if the model is on sale at closeout unless you have a burning need for a particular capability it can be an awesome way to upgrade.

For those that are into sensor wars: http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2015/02/23/mirrorless-battle-m…

Honestly I think apart from resolution and depth of field, differences are pretty negligible… might be different in low light though.

I'd take this over the A6000 if I want 4k and have lenses that aren't image stabilised. Probably the best bang for buck mirrorless camera at the moment. I've been thinking about upgrading to this from my GX7 but I have a compact that does 4k so I might wait it out a bit.

EM10 Mark II is also good value if you don't care about 4k. Nothing against Sonys though, I like their cameras. I have an A7 and would love an A6xxx as a secondary E-mount body but they're charging more and more for each new camera they release.

The GX85's selling point is its 4K video stabilisation imo

  • Which store did you price match? Does Teds price match?

    • I got it from Camera House. Teds will probably do it if they have it in stock.

  • I have the 25mm 1.7 lens paired with an E-M1. Not bad at all. I got the lens for a steal at $160. Couldn't really see any difference to that and the Oly 25mm 1.8 so sold the Oly for $335

    • I purchased the 25mm f1.7 lens from B&H last November when they had their $99 introductory special, and whilst unbeatable for that price found it not as sharp as the 25mm Olympic.

Initially I put it down to perhaps my lens not being perfect, but have since tested a couple more loaned from friends that they received as bonuses. Those too were not quite right.

Since then I sold the Panasonic f1.7 & Olympus and purchased the Panasonic 25mm f1.4 and whilst it clearly costs more its worth every cent with the photo's you get from it on the GX8, or EM5 bodies.

    $764 here

Cameras has a good price performance ratio.
I'm not going into a sensor discussion but camera is highly recommended by many reviewers.

  • I would buy it with the 12-32mm for only $85 more. It sells for +$200 if you don't want to keep it.

  • i was so close to pulling the trigger on the olympus em10 ii, but after seeing this post and reading reviews i'm now torn.

any recommendations out of these two?

    • You can get em 10 ii with 2 lenses, $150 gift card and accessories pack for almost same price. Sounds like a good deal. The main difference is 4k recording.
