I had a similar designed fan (I think it was a black one made by Sunbeam) and it is noisier because the smaller diameter fan blades spin at a higher speed.
These types of fans don't have multiple blades but rather a column that spins with a scoop that shovels air out.
I got a black one from aldi and turfed it because it made an awful racket, enough to affect me trying to fall asleep.
I got the Bunnings one for $0.10 cheaper..

built in handle technology, I've always wanted one of those to carry around with me on summer days.
I had two of these, you get much better air flow out of a standard fan.
You mean you need two to get better air flow out of one standard fan?
Its just 30W. The most common cheap pedestal fans are 40W. The one's with very good air output I have seen were atleast 90W.
How do these compare to your classic blade fan for both air flow and noise? They obviously look more compact but the other two things are more important in my opinion.
