Is MBA Worth It?

Hi all,

I'm considering to take MBA degree and considering the high fees, I wonder of an age-old question: Is MBA worth its fees today?

Is it worthwhile to invest $80k+ in Australia's top business schools (not to mention additional 2-4 years of time to study).
Does the salary increase attractive enough? Does it open more job opportunities?

All opinions welcome, however please state if you are-having/have/want-to-have MBA degree.

  • Are you currently working in a relevant industry?

    • Yup, I work for a bank

      • You need to provide us with more information if you want us to give you a good answer:
big 4 bank or investment bank?
        what is your current position?
how long have you been there?
what did you study at uni? which uni?
how's your networking ability? do you anticipate you can get promoted easily?
what is your gender (not being sexist!), age, nationality?
what is your dream job, salary?

        Considered, but decided against it.

  • Not completed an MBA

In my opinion, if you are certain an MBA it's required to get you where you want to go in your career then do it. Maybe first get a hold of those "MBA in 10 days" type books or complete an online intro course to see if it is something you would wish to pursue.

You'll find many companies that require them actually fund or even run MBA courses for large groups of employees. Woolworths used to do this.

I had a guy apply to work in my helpdesk team who had an MBA. I quickly rejected it due to him being overqualified for the role. There is also the risk you run in limiting your career options if you are junior or plan to take a vertical change trying something else

  • +1

Michael Jordan made a lot of money through it.

    • Amongst some of the highest paid sneaker salesmen in the world.

  • Not completed an MBA

In my opinion it is a waste of money (unless you can get work to pay/give you time off for it?). Many of the skills that you learn are available through other avenues, often for a cheaper cost.

I was looking at doing this as a method of helping advance my career (entrepreneur / healthcare IT) but I found that employers are more interested in practical application (Experience) rather than paper based certification (at a higher level).

If you are unsure i would recommending only spending $15 and getting The Personal MBA , which I found very useful

  • Seems like a lot of people are doing MBA these days.

I don't think it will help everyone… just those who are brilliant already, enhancing what is already there.

Real world application of what you learn is very individual.

I'm currently working with some who has a master's degree in maths… I swear he was illiterate/math in space(lowest highschool maths) before I found that out
