I finally gave in and am ready to buy minecraft. It is currently 35AUD at minecraft.net. Has this game be cheaper in the past? Should I wait for a sale etc. or buy from some place else?

I don't think Minecraft really ever has any discounts. The only place you should ever buy it is at minecraft.net. It's possible you can buy a game card from stores also, but not 100% sure if they are sold anymore and if so where.
It's well worth the price (in my opinion) especially once you get into mods, it's endless fun.
