  • Nice

  • In general, how are these dash cams powered? Where are they charged from?

    • +1

Your car's 12v outlet aka cigarette lighter socket

      • +1

Do they need to be connected to the cigarette lighter socket all the time?

        • Yes. Some 12V sockets only work while the ignition is turned on. I wired a separate line for mine, put in a large SD micro card and use it as a car security Digital Video Recorder - it won't run your battery flat.

        • +1

so this particular dash cam would not record if the car was parked and turned off?

        • +2

@David76: Correct but only if your cig lighter socket is one that is disabled when you turn the car off. Most cig lighters are alive on accessory but are off when ignition is turned completely off. Some are active all the time.
If connected to a constant live power source it would stay on. The time it would record before writing over the oldest file would be dependant on the size of the memory card you use.
There are graphs on the net that will show you how much you can record on a ? size card at ? resolution.

  • Review here: http://behindthewheel.com.au/gator-full-hd-dvr-1080p-car-cam…

Overall, the unit is easy to operate and navigate with many menu options being a higher end model.
No GPS on this unit - others have it but cost more.

Should I be surprised that at 1080p in daylight you still can't make out a single number plate?

      • Yeah, looks like shit.

        • The review is from Sep 2014, it's not the same model. It's a totally different shape.

  • HDMI out - didn't expect that. Got one for the rear view in the canopy on the ute, going to use it as a rear view cam as well. Now I just have to remember to wash the dust off the window so it can actually record something.

  • Bought 2
Happy to pay an extra $15 instead of getting the ones that get heaps of love from overseas.
    Local warranty and fast stock
Should be good. Now we need a memory card deal

  • Thanks grabbed one to replace my old gw1

  • Can anyone comment on the Gator Dashcam vs Target (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/177836)

    • The Target TACC1 is terrible, I bought one and had to return it because once it heats up the picture becomes blurry.
The instructions say do not use in temps over 40°, so they are basically admitting that it's not fit for purpose.

      • Would you say the Gator one is worth getting?

        • +1

I have no experience with it sorry, but at least you are buying from an Aussie store so you are covered under Aus Consumer Law.
If it's not fit for purpose just return it.

  • I want to buy one but am worried about thieves smashing my windows to steal it. Do you often disconnect it?

    • i run my dashcams while parked and find that the vast majority of people do no notice the camera; including a pack of dipshit kids trying to mess with my car, security guards and other random people peering into it.

those who do notice the cameras are either too disgusted (lol) or camera-shy to want to steal it

  • How does the night recording look on this device?

  • How good is this dash cam as compared to

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/282008841785 and

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/351830937762

Both of them appear to be HD 1080.

    • Be carefull on ebay. Some cameras claim to be 1080 and may even have that printed on the camera housing, but they may have different internal components and may record in lower resolution. I suspect the ones you have listed may only record in 720p.

  • This dash cam records at 1080 but only at 24FPS and in AVI format

  • This is different to the cheaper rrp gator at sca. Same specs but that one has 140 degrees and this is 120
