Honestly, it is probably more economical to just buy a sub-$100 mono-laser printer.

    • +1

plus use this just as a scanner

      • +1

You cannot just use it as a scanner. No Ink = no scan

        • I have a slightly older model, and you can use it just as a scanner (to image file fine.) Just can't scan & print..

        • +2

@darkage: I have a slightly different model with LCD screen, and when its out of ink it wont scan. Printer just starts up with Error out of ink..

        • +1

I dont know who negged you. We have a higher model cannon and it wont scan without inks. You can download an app on your Android and take a pic for scanning and then print.

        • +2

But what if you only use the scanner and never use the ink so you never run out of ink anyway?

        • +2

@MissG: /S Pretty sure the ink 'runs out' after a few months.

        • +1

@Shermanpk: Do you mean it dries out? How do you run out if you don't print?

        • +1

@MissG: how long does it take to dry up the ink? otherwise for $18 a great scanner which can be occasionally used for printer.

        • @MissG:

I was being somewhat sarcastic and referencing that many printers have been programed to report running out of ink after a certain number of pages and/or time period.
I'm not sure if printers still do this or not.

        • +1

it will dry and the software will try to fix it and you will need a Psychologist

        • depends on age of software just downgrade!

        • @payless69: I think I already need one after trying to buy a standalone scanner and being shocked by the price of a scanner when you see deals like this. FFS I love my mono laser, I just want a cheap, fast doc scanner that doesn't require manual dexterity on my part.

      • Try connecting to a Windows PC and use the scanner program comes with the OS. Although it displays error message on the printer, it will scan if you use the program to give order. Don't use the "Scan" button on the printer to give order.

        • did you use this printer? i 'm purely thinking of it to buy as a cheap scanner.

        • @Rsg:

I did not have this exact printer, therefore I cannot assure you the method above works for this printer. But I think it will work, based on my computer knowledge as an IT graduate.

If you are only casually using a scanner to scan stuff, I recommend you download scanner app such as CamScanner on your phone. The scan quality through your phone camera will be no worse than a scanner like this most of the time.

        • @Alucardology: yeah true that.. but lighting is always an issue though if you use phone camera in night time. how long does it take for ink to dry up?

        • Although it displays error message on the printer, it will scan if you use the program to give order. Don't use the "Scan" button on the printer to give order.

I very much doubt it would work like this, no matter where you "give the order" it still has to be processed and scanned by the printer, and I doubt you only have to bypass the printer's scan button.

    • +5

Why would you do that when you can just buy more printers?

    • +1

Any suggestions? All I want is duplex printing, WiFi… There's so many, and some have got to be insta-landfill!

      • +4

I have a Fuji Xerox cp215W colour laser printer, great quality prints, no wastage of ink as no purging, wifi built in. 3rd party cartridges can be had for $7 and its good for 50k pages (100 reams of paper). I have put 3 boxes of paper through it already with no issues.
I had enough of inkjets and just wanted something that would work without messing about with printheads and cartridges all day.
Get a laser/LED and leave inkjet behind
        Just my thoughts.

        • Totally agree! That Fuji looks great but it's discontinued, do you happen to know what the current equivalent model is? (Google is running me in circles…)

        • +1

Agreed - got the cm225 fw and never looking back. I have intermittent times of needing to print moderate amounts and laser can sit around doing nothing obviously without worrying about ink-dry issues. I do wish they'd make the same functionality in a more compact format though, it does take up a bit of space.

        • +1

@nuchalis: You can get the CP225 here for $170, it appears as if Xerox are moving away from the smaller models so buy one quick while you still can (I have a spare, just in case)

        • @Quarn: $159 @ Computer Alliance, Brisbane

        • you make my cp215W print on both sides and you will be a hero!

      • +1

A couple years ago I got a Brother HL4150CDN and my bestfriend got the slightly updated model with Wifi. They have been brilliant, they do duplex, they do colour (not photo quality or anything), but for documents and whatnot they are pretty awesome. 10,000 page cartridges are around $100, I think $200 for genuine.

Not sure if the new ones are any good still but 9/10 would recommend getting a semi-expensive laser printer (around $250-500 is a good budget).

    • ink is ink laser is laser Period!

  • Same price at HN

  • not bad as a cheap scanner.

    • But is it one of those combos that refuse to scan if there is no ink left?

Edit: It might be possible to bypass it with this hack: https://www.technipages.com/canon-pixma-mg5220-scan-without-…

      • My black ink warning light is on but it scans ok. I just tried taking the ink cartridges out and it wouldn't scan and gave a message that the printer was in use.

Got mine at Big W last year for $19. The paper feed mechanism failed soon after. Good enough scanner for the money though.

I don't bother with colour printers anymore and just use a black only laser printer. A refill kit with new chips and enough toner for two fills costs me less than $40 and lasts a couple of years.

    • How to upvote you since you provide the difference between two of them?

    • bought stacks of both $12 and $15 the black is uglier but prints finer I even like the scanner more but I run out of room in my wheelie bins dumping them after the ink is harvested.
as for your comparison: we can play Ebony and Ivory the ugly and the beast ah they both are super photocopiers!

Finally an inkjet printer that is designed to be refilled. Good one, scotty!

      Nice pickup. Fixed.

  • this is my third MG2560 …….have 2 empty printer in my room right now ….how do i recycle them?

    • Officeworks have a recycling program :)

      • thanks for telling me. will do

  • is it mad just to buy one of these every 6 months when you run out of ink?

I have the 2540 from a similar deal and its getting low on ink…I only occasionally printer or scan.

    • i tried to use refills, it is buggy, sometimes works. It stops working now, i guess i had to buy one new just for the ink lol

    • I refill my cartridges with non branded ink from eBay. Mine uses PG10 cartridges which can be topped with a syringe. Each of my cartridges get filled about twice before I decide to chuck them out.

The reason is that the cartridge will eventually smear the prints or have really inconsistent print quality. Im still puzzled as to how to keep the print nozzles in good condition.

  • Printer? I hardly knew 'er

  • Awful printer, turns up as ink run out if you don't print in a while

    • get yourself a HP! you are gonna love Canon!

  • Can you print on photo paper with this printer?

    • of course!

      • great thanks :)

  • Thanks… Bought one from Wetherill park! Not many have this in stock!

  • $33 online, do I need a code or something to get that price?

    • Looks like they changed the price. I'll mark it as expired.

  • since Big W has sold this one many times for $15 it would be fair to say that the wholesale price would be less!
Since GG and JBHIFI are the same company now we are all just taken for one big ride!!

  • just come back from this store and they put a non wireless HP for $17 that uses new cartridges again.
Since HP sells them near empty it is not a bargain!
