Sounds like the plumber over twisted the flex hose. Pretty typical of a dodgy plumber not so much the product
Waiting for mine to arrive from ebay - $35. Having just done my bathroom, I didn't hesitate to purchase from ebay.
The 'bathroom' ebay prices are less than than half the cost of bathroom 'showroom' prices.
I saved even more by going to the warehouse showroom (In North Rocks - Sydney) and purchasing directly from them - saving on ebay and postage fees on towel rails, taps, shower heads, vanity, etc.
The pull out tap was an after thought for the kitchen.
Got the cheapest/finest one from Bunnings a few weeks ago. Seems ok, perhaps a little flimsy (the hose doesn't retract by itself really), so not sure how long it will last for, but happy with it so far. Has two spray modes too.

is it worth getting an italian brand like Dorf?

(@slknv has had some bad experience - but maybe that was a one off)
i was considering caroma

We got this one a few years ago. I'm looking to replace it because the rubber button for the spray function has completely degraded and broken off. We don't use the spray function that often either. Actual tap body and mixer is working great but you can see the white plastic button and it looks rubbish. Wouldn't care so much if we weren't looking to sell the house soon.
Sorry, I don't have really any experience with taps apart from what I've already said, so I can't really provide any input in relation to brands.
We bought this one from Ikea when it was on sales (can not remember exactly how much, under $100) and really love it. Even at full price we think it is justified.

Don't buy a dorf tap. When we built a house we optioned this tap, and within months the braid was fraying and coming off. Dorf refused to look at it under warranty saying it was the Builders responsibility, and the builder said to take it up with dorf. Ended up changing it to another brand anyway as I was sick of dealing with dorf "customer service".
